slip-on mufflers any suggestions
« on: July 01, 2009, 06:37:21 PM »

I am new to the Forum,

I just bought a 09 SE road glide and love the bike and how it rides, I hate the sound of the SE pipes, I was thinking about the reinharts or the crushers, not sure which would be better.  One of the other links said you should always use a PC if you replace the mufflers and also mentioned changing the air cleaner.

I am new to all this and am look for as much help as i can get before i waste any money.

thanks

Welcome to the site.  A lot of great folks and information here.  Most people with 09's have put on a head pipe without a cat converter in it and get baffles for their stock mufflers  from Fulsac..  Others will chime in and may post links for you as there is a lot of info on this subject here.

I guess i don't really know what a cat convertor is? will that help with both power and sound? i know changing the baffles will help the sound but what do i gain from changing the head pipe

I am very happy with my Crushers , but that is on a 2004 SEEG  103, so the sound may be quite different on your 110, nice and mellow/deep at idle and cruise but definitely have some bark when the throttle is twisted. They are a little raspy at times, basically at mild acceleration and that is my only complaint with them. They have a very open baffle which probably means you will need some sort of tuning device. I find that this is the only muffler that gets a very small amount of decel pop even with a very good map and my PCIII USB, however a good tuner can get rid of that. If you like the looks of the Monster Ovals, they also have a great  deep and mellow sound without the raspiness, but I sold mine since I did not like the way they looked on the bike.

Good luck

I have a 09 SECU and I went with CFR slipons, (Cass Faus Racing) you can get them over the net for about $600 and you don't have to do anything else, no race tuner or powercommander, you can but you don't need to.  I like the sound the best of all the slip-ons loud but not too loud, deep but no bark, no backfire and there are a megaphone shaped chrome which is great. I also picked up about 3 mph with the change.

I always opt for D & D exhaust. However, that is my preference

Your options are numerous....to say the least; and with that said everyone on this site will probably have a different answer for you.  I just purchased an '09SERG, and did not like the sound of the pipes.  Through researching comments on this site I was attracted to the Fullsac replacement core option.  I called the good folks at Fullsac (www.fullsac.com) and inquired about my options with their products.  Thursday I installed my 2" Fullsac cores, and I am extremely satisfied with the sound, and ease of installation. There is a link on their website that takes you to CVOHarley.com and shows each step of the process.  This was a very economical solution for me......total cost was less than $150.00. I plan on taking off my header pipe this winter, and letting the guys at Fullsac remove the cat, and I will get the Mastertune at that time....but for now, I am very satisfied with just the core installation.

yep, what HE said!!
Got 2.0 in my 120hp bike
Got 1.75 in the 80hp bike
Love the sound. Don't know what "performance" increases I have gained (or lost), but bikes run flawlessly, no complaints.

Well it's all a matter of choice I guess.

I put on the Klock Werks 4-inch exhaust and absolutely love them.  They are not as loud as the V&H Monster Ovals or the BUB-7's, which I also like. These have a deep tone and several of the mechanics at the HD shop have them on their bikes now that they've heard what they sound like.  Only issue the HD shop had is they had to dent the pipe to clear the frame on the on the right (throttle) side.  You'd never know it, they look good (slash cut with rolled ends).  They say Rinehart owns Klock Werks.  I don't know, but they sound good and great chrome quality (just expensive).

Well I am another one who is all for the Fullsac baffels.  Sounds great.  Best of all, less than 150.  I get many complements on the sound of my bike, I have the 2.25 baffels

i think the real answer depends upon what you really want

sound?
power?
looks?
is the warranty important or not?
is money no object?

the catalytic converter is a emissions control device that in 09's is only on the cvo bikes - from 10 on its on all bikes & can be a choke point for high flow at high speeds.
sound? if you just want louder - get fulsacs
power? if you want power get fulsacs and take the cat out of the header
warranty? despite some arguments to the contrary - put non legal exhaust on and the engine warranty is void period. the rest of the bike warranty will still be good but the engine warranty will go out the window.
change the air cleaner - then you want tts, or super sert - if you want to use PC you need to use the version with auto tune or you will be seriously bummed out.
looks? see above - dual exhaust for example actually lowers torque in the 2k to 3k range so its a bad choice unless you drive 90 all the time.

the 09 non cat header is nearly as good as anything you can get for under 900 bux - fulsacs in the stock muffler body is about as good as you can get and its only about 200 bux shipped. after that its all show and slow and spending money for looks and sound. which is cool - just dont think that a quick pipe change will make your bike way faster, it wont. typically these days cams and tuner software will actually provide a bigger bang for the buc and are invisible.

keep in mind - if warranty and money are no object then do whatever you want - but it will need a tuner and a tune if you change the air cleaner at all.
