Sidewalk Parking
« on: July 10, 2009, 11:05:29 AM »

I went to breakfast this morning with a small group of friends at our favorite cafe in Sacramento. While we are all enjoying our steak and eggs in walks two patrol officers asking for the owners of three motorcycles parked outside the cafe to step outside. Over at one booth, 3 guys dressed in motorcycle fatigues and obvious owners of the bikes ignored the officers request and continued doing their thing. The group finished up a few minutes before us and once they were outside we could tell something was up outside. So we hurried our butts up to get outside to find out whats going on. Turns out three motorcycles, two Vulcan's and one VTX were parked on the sidewalk in front of the cafe and someone in a wheel chair called the cops complining they couldn't navigate around the bikes. The cops already had a flat bed tow vehicle setting up to tow the bikes out. The bike owners were crying the blues claiming they were parked on private property and the the cops didn't have the right to take their bikes. Well, as always, the cops won that argument. We didn't stick around to watch each bike loaded and carted off but it was in process. I originally thought these guys were 'Harley' guys and had to chuckle a bit when i found out differently.

I see motorcycles parked on sidewalks all the time, I or any of my friends do not park on sidewalks, and I don't think we ever will. For curiosity, I wanted to set up a poll asking 'do you park your motorcycle on city sidewalks'  but cant figure how to do that, so I'll just through the question out.

Do you park your motorcycle on City/County sidewalks

Nope.  They're for pedestrian traffice not for motor vehicles.  Worse is these guys probably had a chance to avoid getting towed if they'd not just blown off the cop when he first asked for the bike owners.  Hard to expect him to give someone any slack later when someone treats him like he's not even there to begin with.

I park on sidewalks ONLY during events where I'm directed to. Sidewalks are there for transportation (pedestians, handicapped, et. al.) purposes.

Kinda, I have a buddy that has a bar with a big open patio, he allows us to park at the edge, but not anywhere else. I also park in striped areas on the parking lot if it doesn't interfer with cars in parking spots. I figure parking in the striped areas leaves full spots for the cars. :nixweiss:

I dont park on the sidewalks unless instructed to - I dont want to talk to the men in blue!

I do park in the strips in the parking lots - if no parking spaces are available.

What restaurant?   Want to be sure I don't park on the sidewalk. :huepfenlol2:

Now in San Francisco, if you ride, you park on a sidewalk!  I did have an officer tell me (no, didn't get a ticket.....he was nice about it) that it's supposed to be under the awning or ovrehang (up against the building, not on the street side of the sidewalk).

In Memphis you get a ticket for parking on the sidewalk, even a scooter.  Saw that downtown.

Sometimes I park on the sidewalk when I meet my bro's by a Dunkin Donuts or a Starbucks that we sometimes meet at.
Or in front of my Harley dealer. So I guess I'm guilty as charged. But allways out of the way of people so's not to block any one.

Hey JCZ,

The restaurant is Granite Inn Cafe on Pacific in Rocklin (used Sacramento for easy reference for members) Wife and i ate breakfast there this morning and found out from our waitress that the cops actually didn't have the bikes towed but they each got ticketed. (lucky dudes after all)  Waitress said cops are cracking down here because its a major problem, saying "seems like everyone with a motorcycle parks in front on the sidewalk"

I park where I can watch my scooter if possible and not get ticketed/towed.  Not always possible, but local knowledge of what's acceptable is very important in these situations.  JMHO.  :) har!  :drink:spyder
