It took a week to get the wheel, but I'm back in action.  Worked out OK since they retorqued the steering head, and did the ABS flash while it was there.  Only missed one nice weekend.

D-Day Inspection found an R1 so I'm waiting for a replacement wheel. Will also get ABS update and a new front tire because of cupping and few other minor items.

« Reply #276 on: October 25, 2009, 09:18:47 AM »

What is the recall for. I just checked my VIN on HD & said there was a recall on wheels. What is the problem with them.. is there any other recalls that i need to get done. I will be out of town for couple days & going to take bike into shop...

Some wheels were heat treated twice which can cause them to fail. They need to pull the rear wheel and look for certain numbers to see if your's is one of the affected.

Any other recalls would have shown up in the same place you found the wheel recall.  And the actual numbers on the wheel recall were very small.  Get it checked and ride on.

I've aquired two sets of these wheels without any knowledge of this issue until last night.  I don't spend time in the SERG board (or boards other than my model) however, I do scan the wheels board.

Moving this thread up to the wheels board for all to see.

Talked to HD today.  If you've seen the Safety Recall #0140 (4 pages), you know that it has each wheel's serial number broke out into five groups and it says that group 4 should be the 22 and 23 characters of the serial number and should be an "R1" or an R2" to qualify for the recall.  It goes on to spell out how many charictures should be in each group on the serial number.

On the wheel that I just bought, group 3 calls for nine characters.  However, my wheel only has six characters in group 3, which puts the R2 in the 19th and 20th place of the serial number instead of ttuallhe twenty-second and twenty-third place that the bullitin calls for.  So, I thought "well then, that doesn't apply to my wheel, since the R2 on my wheel is out of place".

The HD customer service rep checked on it and called me back, saying that the MoCo provided way to much information and made it more confusing, that if your serial number has an R1 or an R2 then it's on the recall list!   So.....I'll be getting a new wheel, bearings, etc.

The safety recall kit actually contains: a new wheel, valve stem, two bearings, sleeve, rotor screw, exhaust clamp and spring clip.

Are those the wheels you just trade for or another set. Did they come from a dealer.  :confused5:
