Looked at the 2010's while picking up my S/E Roadglide from service and found that the O2 sensors have shrunk in size dramatically and are now located one above the other in the collector.  That's a fer piece from the exhaust port where I was always told they had to be within 6 inches of.  Anyone know what the deal is and or what the changes are?

I have the new 2010 2 into 1 Streetglide headpipe on order.
Rumor has it that all 2010 Touring models have a cat in the headpipe.
I love Harley's.

Many cars have one sensor before and a second sensor after the cat. First one is for auto tuning and second one is for the CEL (check engine light) to let you know the CAT is no longer effective.

All modern cars have sensor's before and after the cats by law.  Let me rephrase that; all cars and light trucks built and sold in the United States after January 1, 1996 were required to be OBD II equipped.  OBD II stands for Onboard Diagnostics version two.  The system is designed to be self checking (no sniffer necessary to do emission checks), and the assumption is that if the ECM says everything is kosher, the vehicle is in compliance with EPA and CARB regulations.  When we take our vehicles in for emission testing, the 96 and later models just have the OBD II connected to the testing center's computer, which checks for codes and any missing self-test data.  Only the older models still get hooked up to a sniffer on a dyno.

V Tuning with data aquired from the front and rear 02s may be a thing of the past if the sensors are in the plenem and not specific to each cylinder. A gang reading from both cylinders will be useless.

The 2010 sensors have a 4W heating element as well...(a good thing IMO).

Autos have had that from the beginning.  Maybe they are now wideband.

True, nothing new in technology, just new for Harley.
Wideband? No. These are still a switching (some say narrow band) sensor.

Nope, still narrowband.

Does this smaller new style o2 sensor make it impossible to switch to another exhaust system at this time or is there some type of adaptor to use the old style o2 sensor equipped pipes? Did that make sense?

Good question. And will the new sensors work with an open exhaust system, no cat.

JW

An adapter would be the easy part.
Sensor lead extensions may be needed to reach the bung locations of todays pipes.
But then, would the ECU command a reading of the O2 sensor at the proper time especially for low RPM operation? (as was brought to my attention by Steve Cole)
One could install/weld a set of 12mm bungs in the approximate 2010 OE location.
Soon to be found out is the amount of crosstalk (if any) of the new switching sensors due to their new location.

Steve at Fullsac hopefully will enjoy additional business removing cats from the 2010 pipes.

Guys

You need to read this link that JC posted.

here's the thread,  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=39388.0

here's the link,      http://www.box.net/shared/hkt4a2vm3m

It has an incredible amount of info.

For example!

Quote
•New smaller heated oxygen sensors will be integrated into the front pipe casting. •New sensor is a 4 wire narrow band sensor.•New service tool (HD-50017) is needed to torque the new heated O2 sensors.

Take time to read this info.
I'm not sure where JC got it, but thank you JC!
