2010 SESG muffler question
« on: August 10, 2009, 07:06:00 PM »

Just picked up my SESG and have been looking to do exhaust--as usual. I know I want the V&H cat free headpipes when they come out with the new for '10 O2 sensor relocated ones, but for now I would just like to do some slip ons on to my stock pipes. Do I need to do a reprogram for just mufflers or will the O2 sensors compensate enough?? I know the right way when I do the complete system I will do the re-program, but for now budget can only do mufflers. Can I get away without the programmer temporarily?

You've already got the free flowing AC on the SESG, but putting the free-flowing mufflers on will cause it to run leaner...will the ECM with the sensors be able to compensate enough?  Don't know.  My dealer recommended putting a fuel management device on just in case (was going to add one anyway when I changed the headers), so I'm going with the SE Pro Race Tuner and the new "Smart Tune" software.  I'm also putting Vance and Hines 4" Basic Slippons on mine.  I wanted 4" cans because anything smaller would, in my opinion' look odd in that cutout in the back.  I was going to go with the Vance and Hines standard ovals, but according to their website, they won't fit the SERG, so with the SESG having virtually the same setup, they probably won't fit the SESG either.  I'm anxious for them to get in so I can get rid of those quiet stock pipes...damn they suck!!  :-\

$.02:  It appears that the SESG for 2010 is really a 3009 SERG with a batwing fairing.  The exhaust, from what I hear is identical to the SERG but for the relocated O2 sensors.  Assuming that is correct, the SERG owners had great success  and power by cat drilling or removal and recoring mufflers.  Jim Kerr also posted threads which were very helpful and had photographic instructions:

Removing a Catalytic Converter form 09 CVO Road Glide

Installing Fullsac Baffles on 09 CVO Road Glide

That process cost about $140 and took a couple of hours with a buddy and a couple of beers.  If you have to have a "cat free" headpipe see here:

Modifying the stock headpipe for more power!

After market head pipes and muffs....  about $900.   :nixweiss:   :nixweiss:  Note that anything that leans out these lean running engines requires a tuner and dyno.  In that regard, plan all of your mods first, then tune so as not to waste $$.

The SE Pro Race Tuner came out in 2008.  It's made by a different company now.  For 2010 models, there's a new software called Smart Tune.  Basically the new Pro Tuner has a 15 min recording function.  You hook the SEPRT up to the ECM, go out and ride and run the bike through it's paces.  After the ride, hook the SEPRT up to the computer and download what the unit recorded.  The new Smart Tune software will purportedly analyze the data and make recommended changes to the map to fine tune the settings.  You can then either download the new map or discard it.  It sounds almost like an auto tune with a manual interface...if that makes sense.  I'm going to have the dealer install the SEPRT the first time...

There's a thread here somewhere that says who makes the SE Pro Race Tuner now...I don't actually know who makes it for HD.   Sorry.   :nixweiss:

The SERT is now the TTS Mastertune.....

Thanks for that information.  :2vrolijk_21: What's new for 2010 is the software, not the actual interface device.  Unfortunately, the software costs an additional $29.95.  The only changes to the software, from what I've read, is it has the maps for 2010 configurations with the new 02 sensors and also the "Smart Tune" application.

smart tune seems to be a good thing. I will build a base map for you while you ride and get you close and will just need fine tuning.

That's what they claim.  I guess I'll find out soon enough when I get it installed.  Haven't heard from the dealer yet on the software or the V&Hs basic 4" slippons.  That's what they didn't have in stock, so just waiting to hear from them...perhaps after I get back from Vegas next Thursday, they'll have something for me.

I'm trying to decide between the V&H slip ons and the fullsac mod. I will do the headpipe and the TTS over the winter.

I could not find the new SERT on HD's website. I thought the TTS version was it.
