Going gear drive
« on: December 01, 2005, 12:12:05 PM »

With all the help I've received from my cyber riding buddies I now am going to drop the nut on gear driven cams.My question is do I use the same grind in say an Andrews cam or is there a better cam to go with to get some more power while I'm in there.Bigger lift but don't want to notch the pistons,so if anyone has changed cams let me know how you made out.     Q

[smiley=nixweiss.gif]BigDaddy, I am also switching over and want to upgrade when I do it. Doesn't make much sense to me to put the same grind back in. You and I have SE-203 cams which have a 510 lift. I have been told that the stock TC88 heads in our bikes will only allow a 530 lift (give or take) because of the valve springs. So now I have to decide if I want to put a S&S or Andrews 537 lift gear setup in and be happy or , get in to removing the heads and replacing the springs with stiffer ones to allow a 620 or so lift. Then the next question is ....well as long as I have the heads off I might as well have them ported and polished. and what about the compression ratio?, maybe as long as I have the heads off I should think about pistons and so on and so on........................................So I am at the point of doing a little for a little bit of $ or a lot for a lot of $.

What do you think.

Hey Stickman,
Here's a summary from 01/2005 H-D bulletin on camshafts: the 203/204/211 & CVO253 cams work with the stock valve springs up to .550 lift/rev limited. Any more valve lift and you're into the SE 'racing'  valve spring categories of .575 lift/6500 rpm or .650 lift/7000 rpm. I had the bulletin linked in another thread but it's no longer there at the website. I do have a .pdf copy but can't use that as attachment here.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Thanks CVO do you think I would notice a difference going from 510 to 550 without head work or should I save my coins and get the headwork done or install SE heads?

Hey Stick, whatever you can afford to do is the way I'd go. I am pricing it out now and will be pricing to port and flow the heads as well. i will let you know the outcome.  Q

I highly recommend the S&S 510G and as it has enough lift and requires no head work.  Much better low to mid range power.  I am at 105 Hp and 112 torque or was it the other way around with a HUGE increase in the bottom end.  I have the dyno sheet at home and will try to post or e-mail if anyone is interested.  Other mods: PCIII, Screaming Eagle Lifters, Doherty air cleaner and powervalve kit, Rheinhart exhaust.

Well I'm not sure how noisy but I know how loud the bike is without the baffles in the Rineharts. I guess yuo could drown it out if you wanted to. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Spiderman,

Have you ridden an EVO or Sportster?  Those are gear driven cams from H-D, and if set up properly they really aren't bothersome.  I would expect the S&S gear drive to be louder than the chain, since Harley went to the chain to reduce noise, but I haven't heard anyone describe it as god awful.

It depends on the valve train / type of cam some are noisier than others, but its really not much different.  I have 2 different S&S Cams in my bikes and I really dont notice the sound difference between them and the stock 04 SEEG.   None of my motors or valve trains though are so radical that you cant ride the bikes all day.   When you get into the really radical stuff you can hear it, but again its what your used to.

Big,

I am currently testing 2 cams for Zippers as bolt ins.  They have not been endorsed yet to be released by Zippers, but one version should yield more top end Vs and the other model should generate big torque.  I am hoping to start the testing on these bolt in cam's in the next 2 weeks.  I can not release any further info's on them, just that I did receive them today in the mail for testing.
