Have come to realize that part of the dissatisfaction that comes from some of the riders on SE 103s is that they haven't learned how to ride them.  Other than just highway cruising, and especially in the kind of riding that Train described, I'm always a gear lower on this bike than any 88 I was ever on (no matter how well tuned it is).  That's just where the torque band is.  These motors just don't lug too low too well.  It seems silly to tell someone that they've got to downshift occasionally to make the motor happy.  Their ears should tell them that.  But, I guess, not always...  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I rode my '06 bone stock (pipes and air) for nearly 6500 miles, no problems.  Pulled like a FR8TRN (pun intended) thru the mountains, 2-up with fully loaded bags and tourpak, at triple digit speeds.  The power was way more than my '04 Ultra had with the pipes, air kit, download and PCIII.  Mine was one of the firsts in the dealerships, if the motor mount were an issue I'd probably have it, and the way I ride, it would of broke, I'm not easy on this thing by any stretch of the imagination.

Now with the pipes, air kit and Race Tuner added, it's a completely different bike.  HD has to meet EPA requirements in order to sell motorcycles, if the guy doesn't like that then he should eliminate the EPA, good luck there....It takes very little to open up the detuning and get the motors back up to where they should be.  I'm over 7000 miles from riding it off the dealers lot, and I have never been happier with a motorcycle.

I HAD A SE '04 AND WAS SO AWESOME!!!! THE 103 ENGINE...MAKES THE BIKE FLY!!

Exactly the problem we've been preaching on this site for the past couple of years.  Maybe there's a need for a seperate thread dedicated to riding style on the 103 to eliminate some  misconceptions and "pilot error".  Strokers are strokers and need a lot different care and feeding.

Your exactly right, these things seem to hate being below 2000RPM.  I noticed that riding home from the dealership, changed (my mind) appropriately and never looked back.

Ears or the seat of their pants. The "feel", IMHO, makes a Harley a Harley. Most bikes other then Harleys that I have rode are sooooo smooth and comfy, you have to eyeball the tach just to know where you are (ears not withstanding). With the Harleys, you can feel it and feel the road too I might add, and ohhhhhh what a feeling  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]
Now, put a 6-speed in, and re-learn all over agian how she likes to be riden. Every one you ride will be different...you have to learn to feel them, know what they like and what makes them purr....the same holds true for Harleys  ;)

In my experience, the stock 103 pulls much stronger than the stock 88, even though my 103 is hauling about 200 additional pounds (no, I didn't gain weight -  my 88 was a dyna!)  To add to Twolanes comments, if you look at the dyno chart H-D provides for the SE103 kit compared to the TC88, you'll notice that the 88 achieves max torque between 3000 and 3500 rpm, and the 103 achieves max torque between 3500 and 4000 rpm.  So yes, if you want to feel the full difference you will wind up running about 500 rpm higher on the 103.  This is somewhat counter-intuitive, since most folks think more cubic inches automatically means more grunt at lower rpm.

Perhaps one of the reasons some folks were disappointed initially with the 103 was due to the lousy stock EFI setup, with the super lean low speed map.  Once I richened up the low speed map on mine, I found it pulls much better from 2200 rpm than my 88 ever did, and from 3000 to 5000 there is no contest.

Strange you should say that, for me the 6sp finished it off nicely, I haven't looked for 7th once, always looked for 6th on other bikes though.  But then I've only ridden the SE with the 6sp on it.  Since opening up the intake/exhaust I do find myself using 6th more on the straighter secondary roads too, WAY over the speed limit, but I'm using it more.  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Got my SE slip-ons & SE air cleaner & SERT.  Plan to load map # 36 but tech at stealer tells me this is just a "base" map and bike won't run right with it and need to get it tuned in on dyno.  He says maps in SERTs are not same as on downloads or cartridges and that this is not the same map that will be on Stage 1 Race Calibration cartridge 34304-06 (whenever it is released - now shows b/o unitl 2/3/06 - just keep pushing it out).  What is your experience.  How many of you running map # 36 with no modifications.  In your opion is the tech correct or full of it?  Should I try the SERT map # 36 or wait for the cargridge?

IMHO he's full of $hit.......mine has been running great with that map, Dyno'd would of course be optimal, but I don't really see the need right now.  I plan on getting the Zippers Air Cleaner and having them Dyno it while I'm there, maybe this spring though.....too busy riding right now.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Have you looked at the comments (menu 'Edit File Comments') for this tuning file (141MP002-A0.MT6)?  It says "Application:  2006 'Closed Loop' with Shotgun/Shorty Dual Style Exhaust."  "Configuration:  1690 SE A/c and Mufflers."  "Components:  SE Air Cleaner P/N 29440-99B; SE Slip-fit Mufflers P/N 65115-98B."  Weird - the application description sounds like a Dyna, but the configuration & components fit our bike.  MOCO quality control at work I guess.

Yeah I didn't understand the exhaust too much, but it works great on the bike...

I have the same configuration than you besides I installed the V&H true duals.....and the dealer told me that I have to take back the bike after the break in to put it in the dyno for 4 hours...but the SERT is istalled already. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
