Oil leak around air filter
« on: August 27, 2009, 08:13:45 PM »

I have a 2007 SERK and am well past the rear cylinder oil leak problems, but have recently developed a new oil leak.  At first I thought it was the gasket on the cam cover because that's where I saw oil.  Further inspection showed that the oil was dripping there from somewhere behind the air filter.  Has anyone had this problem?  Any ideas on what to fix?

The oil is probably from the blowby/misting from the rocker boxes and then it enters the carb thru the backplate. It's nothing to worry about unless it's pouring. If you look at your air cleaner  straight on you will see on either side of the cleaner two bolts, one on each side, this is where the breather tubes are connected, it also serves to hold the air cleaner. If you find this is your issue, you should get the maintenance books and read up on your bike, also if not familiar with engines find a book on how an engine works, and also look at the breather system. On a car a pcv valve would be connected to one side and a breather on the other.
If I lost ya at the first line, bring it to the dealer, he will be glad to fix it for ya, and if he's honest he will tell ya what I told ya, and show you, and not charge ya, or you could ride it to Clearwater,Fl and I'd be happy to show you, might even give you a rag to wipe it off.
Some people reroute the venting into a hose and filter and let it vent to the atmosphere.
Hope this helped,if not ignore it.

Almost sounds like a little to much oil in the crankcase... My 09 110 SERG will pump it out into the air filter if I put
any more than 3 1/2 quarts on a oil change.. Try draining a little out and see if that helps..

Wildrat - thanks for the info.  I agree that this is the likely culprit.  I wonder why it does it now at 16k miles but never did it before?  I checked the oil level and cold it is about 3/8" below the full line, which is less than 1/4 of a quart, so that's probably about right.

If I remember correctly, the '07 SERK came with the Screamin' Eagle back plate and air filter.  You may find that the oil is leaking out of the breather bolts where they fit against the heads or the backing plate due to loosening over time.  Pull the air cleaner cover off and see if the oil is running down between the filter element and the back plate, or if it is running down the back side (engine side) of the back plate.  That will give you a better idea of where the problem may lie.

It's probably a good time to take everything apart anyway to clean and inspect the filter.  If you still have the washable fuzzy element from H-D, you may find it's deteriorating and in need of replacement.  I recommend a K&N versus another Chinese knock-off from H-D; it will last for the life of the bike (and then some).

Jerry's right... I just had the same problem... pulled the bolt off, applied my standard issue blue Loctite... and problem solved!

I did not think about vibration loosening things. My stuff does not shake loose, it usually breaks.

This is wild, mine started the same thing Yesterday on our trip back from Helen, Ga, 16,500 miles, I'm running big sucker with K&N air filter, checked oil level its not overfull, hoping that its just loose from vibration. Parts should be in this week for the enhasment, taking it to dealer today.

another thing to do is apply some teflon tape to the breather bolts, keep it low and then a bit of blue loctite at the end, be very careful about tightening. use torque spec. and if that doesn't help, lay a tampon on the inside of the filter on bottom

I've seen those lines routed under the bike and it saves the big mess thats gets all over the right saddle bag. I kind of like that idea, even though we know where that's going.

If it is the oil level, once it gets to where it needs to be, then you'll be okay.  If you've been losing oil and you are 3/8" below full now, it must have been filled higher to start with.  Mine is always at halfway between the full and low marks, and I haven't had any problems.

Oil System Full/Full and you will get residual oil around intake filter.

When I had a breather line with a filter, rather than running the line straight down then to the filter, I ran my line up and over the intake then down the fuel line side over the top and side of the rear cyl then down over the starter thru one of the holes already there then down a bit more and attached the filter. By doing this most of the oil that was exiting the rocker cover breathers would drain back down into the rocker boxes, at least that's why I did on my ole truck, and it's not nearly as ugly as running the line straight down.

we've all talked about this blow by and oil leaks and such. I've had the same issue on my 09. couple weeks ago i did something to "see" if it would help.
I added teflon pipe tape to the breather bolts, only half way up the thread, and then put blue loctite on the end of the thread, re-installed and torqued down.
Since then I have run 5 tanks of fuel, filled the oil to the FULL mark, and guess what, NO LEAKS or blow by.
