New Style Cam Tensioners Really Better?
« on: November 07, 2009, 11:05:15 AM »

Performed inspection teardown and renewed inner cam bearings. Bearings renewed because I did not have tools at time of Cam change. Everything looked great except the inner cam chain tensioner. The Bike has 10800 miles and I feel the wear on the can tensioner was excessive. So I renewed the tensioner and of course can't buy just the wear shoe. The shoe is starting to have chunks of the chip out just like the old spring loaded shoes would do.

The only good thing is if they wear excessively there is no metal to destroy the cam chest.

Also applied S&S Lifters with travel limiters, Feuling Oil Pressure Relief Spring and Screamin Eagle Tapered Pushrod.

Same tools to do both bikes?

I did the SE plate in mine and Bob's. Gear drives in his and the hydraulics in mine. Worked out well.

Brad something got in there and was moving around. That wear you call it is a gouge. Have you cut the oil filter open? It maybe a defective tennionser but I would look around to be sure.

Does not look like it was caused by stray material, it lines up perfrct with the chain. The plastic is chipping out just like the older style. Also notice the color change looks like they are absorbing color from the when it becomes dirty with age.

I have taken many of the hydro camplates out with more, way more miles than yours. And have not seen this before, lite chain marks is all I ever see.  Cannot understand yours. Did an 06 dyna with 60,000 miles on it with hardly any wear.  Doc

My gears show absolutely no sign of tensioner wear whatsoever! ::) ;)

Sorry to see that happen so soon Brad. Wonder if that's a fluke or we're gonna start seeing more of that. :nixweiss:

Brad

On my 09 the shoes looked almost as bad as yours.
The bike had 20K miles at that time.
I tried to keep them but they replaced them under warranty and the Motor Company wanted then back.
So like you, I'm riding the fence on the new tensioner system.

only reason I bought my 09 was the fact of the upgrade to the tensoiner. For I went through 3 sets in 78,000 miles on my fltrsei2.. My evo before that had over 100,000 on her. all I ever did was base gaskets, and tappets... Can someone explain to me , having a bullit proof evo motor, why the change to twincam?. I dont get it ,,so much more maintience, noisey as hell compaired to a evo..I hate the new compensator. and i'd take a cabled carb any day over this eletric throttle and injection... Maybe I'm just a old dog... This willbe my last twin cam if I dont sell it.. I will shop for that last year evo bagger . No need for extended warranty with a evo!! My 2 cent..Ride-on,Haedpan

Without having hands-on of course just guessing here.  But it does look like a wear line and since it lines up as you describe have you felt the chain for roughness oe sharpness?  Perhaps the shoes are being taken down by a chain that's not quite as it should be?

I had my '07 Ultra apart last winter with about 24K miles on it, the shoes were more white to start with, not that yellow yours are, and they showed ZERO wear on em.  Wonder if they've changed the material since the '07 models.......

 :2vrolijk_21:

Also, it appears from the photo that the chain isn't running square with the surface of the tensioner shoe, ie. heavier contact on one side than the other.  Need to make sure the chain is OK, then make sure the cam gears are aligned as close to perfect as possible so the chain will run true, and the tensioner is square to the chain surface.

Considering the lack of quality control and consistency we all saw on the old style tensioners, and considering that H-D still doesn't seem to understand the importance of those items, it wouldn't surprise me if they aren't starting to have the same issues with the new parts that they had with the old stuff.  Take a real hard look at that chain and replace it if there is any doubt in your mind.
