So, , , , to keep this simple I should be able to go to the Harley shop and see what it say on the replacement cam chain box.
I'll give it a whirl Tuesday.
But while I have you, the specs of construction are per Harley correct!

 :2vrolijk_21:

Your parts guy should be able to lookup the Country of origin for most if not all parts, accessories, clothing items, etc. The hydraulic tensioner country of origin is DE; Germany.

My sense on the print spec is that it depends on where the component was designed. For a common outsourced chrome accouterment, the spec is probably all H-D; for suspension components, I'll bet the "working" design belongs to the manufacturer. JMO. Regarding the hydraulic tensioner; I dont know.

Yes, the new late model cam roller chains are made in Italy by Regina, a very prominent chain manufacturer.

They're uniquely made via "roll forming" the plates from round wire instead of stamping them from flat stock like on the 99-06 Morse chains. These new chains are surface-smooth from the beginning due to this proprietary process.

The late model cam chain and tensioner system was designed by Regina and presented/sold to Harley.

Now to find a 110 crank in the box. (or djkak, you could make it easy and tell us where the 110 cranks come from)  ;D

I heard that the new chains were also polished on the outside, don't know that for a fact. I don't want to open up the whole chain VS gear debate again, but I lust don't like the  chain setup with the tensioner. I know the reasons it was don, and the issues there may be when trying to convert to gears, but I think the gears are a better way to go, less lash, and no TENSIONERS!  :2vrolijk_21:

That whole thing started when Hoist quit taking his Prozac. Some folks may also have become confused with Howie’s New York accent; bottom line is that Chinese was confused with Shy Knees.  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=33022.msg533480#msg533480

The Big Twin crank in the 96 and 110's, PN# 23729-07A is made in the USA.

Correct me if I'm wrong (again), but the country designation is for the complete assembly.  What about the individual pieces that comprise the crankshaft assembly, like the left flywheel, right flywheel, crankpin, rods, etc.?  The point I'm trying to make is that many component parts are subbed out these days, and not always to the same vendor, so the country of origin on the box for the complete assembly could be misleading.  In the auto industry I saw parts that were cast in one country, machined in a different country, and then placed into a subassembly in a third country before being shipped to the final assembly plant in possibly a fourth country.  Such is life in a "global" economy where manufacturer's chase the cheapest labor and least restrictive environmental rules across the entire globe.  Not that I have any inside knowledge that the parts aren't all made in the USA, just thought I'd throw out the question in an attempt to help stir the pot a little. ::)

Is that China South Carolina or China Nevada.
I for one would like to see some proof that this stuff was made in China.
Or are people just looking for someone to blame for poor quality control in the US.
Ultimately if Harley is buying or allowing crap then the blame lies with Harley, not the country producing it.
IMHO.

SBB

Chip, I think some of us use the expression "cheap Chinese crap" not with firm knowledge that the parts in fact came from China, but as a general statement for lousy quality no matter the source.  The Chinese brought this on themselves with the many well publicized incidents over the past decade where they shipped defective, dangerous, and often illegally copied products to the greedy companies in this country who enabled them.

I firmly place the blame for the poor quality and reliability on the folks in Milwaukee, regardless of where they purchase their parts.
