That stupid %$&@$# backrest!
« on: December 26, 2005, 09:12:57 AM »

First of all the backrest on the SE is not even worth having. Let me start by saying it is terribly uncomfortable and not adjustable. It is spring loaded to allow the passenger to push it forward when mounting or dismounting the bike, however it sits so close to the seat surface that is does not fold forward. The support bracket under the seat is too far back for a rider of my size (5' 8") to comfortably use highway pegs. The ADJUSTABLE bracket DOES NOT ADJUST. Let me save you the trouble friends. I took it all apart and tried every configuration. Due to the construction of our stock seats (with heaters and all) there is one, and only one, position the moutnting bracket can sit in. Also, of the 3 or 4 height options, or holes the backrest can click into, only the top hole is usable due to the thickness of the seat. The only option is use a different backrest or modify the stock one. I tired the stock backrest from a friend's 05 Ultra and it was a bit better. It sat up higher, was more vertical (which means less of the top edge of the damn thing digging into my back) and far more padding. So now...what to do? The backrest has to match, so, I either extend the arms on the stocker or just a have a bigger and better one made. Then I have to find someone to match the leather. You would think for as much as these bikes cost, all the parts would function. If you are going to use a non-stock seat.....MAKE A NON-STOCK @#&^!( BACKREST BRACKET!

I moved my bracket forward and it works fine now.  Only compromise is that it won't fold forward quite as much since it is closer to the front of the opening in the seat. [smiley=cherry.gif]

that's funny that you mention the frustration w/ the stock backrest.......I had mine ('04 SEEG) off and in a vise bending one of the support arms w/ a pipe (actually a fork downtube) just 2 days ago.  Seems that it somehow got to the point that it wouldn't stay clicked-into the lowest retainer hole on the left side.  Finally fixed that problem, but still have some of the same ill-concieved problems you mention.  ie: the top edge digs into your back, lack of adjustability, etc.  Compared to my Corbin backrest, the design is just not there.  I've gotten use to using a riders backrest (after hurting my lower back on my hardtail) and on anything over a short breakfast run, I depend on them.  So, if anyone comes up w/ a solution to this problem, please share the info....... We had other issues with the rider back rest that came on the flhrsei2.  My passenger was in serious pain if I used it.  Not enough room for her legs under the backrest even when used in the highest position.  I took off the vinyl cover, removed the padding to reveal a plastic support.  I proceeded to cut the lower portion of the support with a jig saw radiusing the corners to provide more space for her legs.  Put the padding back on, trimmed the vinyl and reinstalled it.  It is much better for the passenger without effecting the support I need in the lumbar area.  I would attach pictures if I knew how to do it.

I had on my 02 RK an adjustable backrest (52476-01A) and it need some modacation but after that it was just like setting in your recliner at home I could ride all day (NO PAIN). I know what you mean the ULTRA should mean just that, the ULTRA of the Touring class
