Proper fit of heated gear
« on: November 12, 2009, 04:42:26 PM »

Looking at Harleys' heated jacket and pant liners, pretty sure they are made by Gerbing. Anyway, I am confused by how tight they should be, it makes sense to me that they need to be tight enough to transfer heat, but loose enough to allow you to move. Any tricks for the way to get the best fit?

I can give advice as to what not to do.
Don't buy to large.
I bought a 2xl when it should have been an xl.
In really cold weather (less than 35) I put on a shirt then the heated jacket and then put a sweat shirt on over that to hold the heated liner close to the body.
I think the sizing is a larger than normal so try it on first.

Go to a shop that sells Gerbing rather than HD.  If they are a good Gerbing dealer they will help you try on the clothes.  Here is the trick, Gerbing will make things fit you, it just talkes a little while.  I am 6'4 but only 195 lbs.  I needed non standard sizes, laege has too short of sleeves & XL is just plain too big.  So I tried on several jacket liners until I found one that fit my body & another that had the correct size sleeves.  Then ordered the body size with the sleeve size from Gerbing.  Gerbings made them perfect.  Buying Gerbings without trying on is a risk, the sizes don't run true.

Yes they need to be snug, otherwise you don't get the heat transfer.  The new liners with the micro wire should fit even better as they won't be as bulky with the wires.

If the Gerbing gloves do not fit you correctly all you have to do is find a set of lined gloves (must be lined) that fit you & that you like, then send them to Gerbing & they will pull the liners, wire them & put the liners back in.  Then you have gloves that fit propery.

I don't know about the pants.  I wear Levis or LL Bean lined jeans & the HD FXRG Leather Overpants which is perfect for me.

I do use Gerbing heated socks, I wear a thin pair of silk socks under them & they work well.  They were not comfortable for me without the silk socks.  I use the ones with heat all around the foot, not just on top.

Hope this helps

Gerbing will fit a jacket with sleeves a couple "s shorter than what seems right.Claim it's so you don't get a bunch of material at the wrist. If you ware it off the bike looks like you got your little brothers jacket on.Not that I ware it for an everyday jacket, but sometimes ware it walking around away from the bike or in for a meal.My sleeves end at the wrist bone & don't have a bunching up problem.
Watch the wire doesn't lay on the tank.Doesn't take many miles to abrade the clear coat.

I got an XL, when my normal size is L.

With the leather jacket over the top, it works great - the leather jacket keeps the electric close to the body!

Go straight to the source call Gerbing customer service.  Buy the thermostat so you can regulate the heat.  The liner will cook you if left on high.  The BMWers come with a power outlet so you don't have a wire causing damage to your paint.  I would recommend purchasing a power outlet that can be installed on your bike.  It could double as a battery tender power point when not used for your heated gear.

You got a pic of this power outlet? Sounds interesting.

Are those fuel lines to the left of the spark plug?

That's a picture of Don's (Twolane's) bike so no telling what he was doing to it when the picture was taken. :nixweiss:

I believe one of the lines is the nitrous line.
The other line is the "purge" line that he uses just as he lines up ready to drop the hammer.
And FYI, the purge line comes in handy when the body has had a few to many toddies.
That Don, he knows how to multi task.

Chip's right, nitrous toddy multitasking.  It's the only way to get a happy buzz in a hurry.

Rooster, those are the fuel lines.  That's the old 2000 Road Glide.  Gotta remember that's a Marelli and not a Delphi bike.  The Marelli bikes have a pressure feed and a return line.
