Texas-Places to visit in March??
« on: November 19, 2009, 01:15:17 AM »

My wife and I were thinking about somewhere to go around the end of Feb and the first of March and thought maybe Texas would be a good choice.  Does anyone have any suggestions for areas to visit that time of year that would be far enough south to be warm enough to ride comfortably?  Didn't know how far south we'd need to go to get into warm weather that time of year and which areas would have good riding roads available.  I guess we're just looking for suggestions for general areas to consider rather than specific cities, etc.
TIA

It's still cold that time of year, keep an eye on the temp it may not be to bad, Hill country is very nice, The area around Toledo Bend Reservoir is very nice as well but if the temp is still cold then anywhere south of I-10, Along the Gulf of Mexico you have Galveston, South Padre Island it's real nice there as well but thats way down south could be snowing in N Texas and be in the 60's down there, closer to Louisiana you have Sabine Pass you can also go Into Louisiana from there and take the cost rd hwy 82 the nature trail there's a new road now the last hurricane took out the old rd. As far roads in Texas there all good you can drive 65 and 70 on two lane roads and 70 on the interstate W Texas I believe it's 75. I don't live in Texas I'm from Louisiana but any where you go in Texas you'll enjoy the ride.

Louisiana sounds good too, might stay there and just ride over into Texas for a couple of days.  How's the temp there the first of March?

Feb and March bring wild swings in temps. Can be freezing, or in the 80's. One thing is for sure, that the time of year tht our weather is transitioning, so whatever it is one day, it will change soon. My vote would be for the Hill country, Big Bend State Park, and maybe Palo Duro Canyon. Google any and all for more info. Enjoy your trip to Tejas.
The pic in my avatar to the left is crossing the Pecos River heading from Del Rio to Big Bend.

my wife and i are leaving Tennessee Dec 23rd, stopping in texarkana and getting into San antonio on the 24th, staying there 2 nights, then on to new mexico and AZ with no particular plan as long as we make it back to south padre island for new yrs eve nite and the next. returning home on the 2-3. don't care about how cold it gets or how hot it gets, as long as we don't see snow.

You guys might try the Corpus Christi, Rockport, Port Aransas area.  That time of year you might have low 40's, but most of the time in the mid to upper 60's.

Corpus has the aircraft carrier Lexington to visit and tour, if you are into that type of thing.  You have to take the ferry across to to Port Aransas but it is a short trip of 10 minutes.  Lots of good seafood and cold beer.

Have a great trip.

Obviously you'll be towing you your bikes south to the Gulf Coast Region. You can expect the temperature's in the Houston area in mid March to be low's 50's to the high 65-70. It warms up quickly in the morning and by noon 60. Galveston would be a good destination for great food and warm weather. The ICE HOUSE's will be open and plenty of biker bars to hang out. We like riding the Blue Water Highway from Galveston on South that time of year. Let me know if you decide on Galveston, we would love to show you around...

Hill country!
Did that last spring, stayed in Bandera for a few days.
Roads are very nice, people are nicer!
Little cool some days, but, we headed south, just to chase the sun.
Watch out for deer, they were all over the place!

Skippy, as others have posted, weather in Texas changes very quickly in March.  Northern part of the state is usually cool/cold,  southern part a little better.  Hill Country (west of Austin) & south of that is your best bet.  Watch the weather though.

If you could go just a little later, April is when it starts to get REALLY nice & the southern part of the state is greening up & the temps are much better.

March is a great month to ride in the South Texas Hill Country.  Three sisters, Big Bend are great rides, as is lots of the Hill Country (Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Boerne, etc).  Rarely does it get below 50 that time of year.  And normally in the 70's.
