SE cam swap for 110?
« on: December 14, 2009, 07:43:40 PM »

I am working with my dealer to do some basic modifications to me 2010 seultra. I was planning to have Andrews 54 cams installed with Cometic.030 head gaskets. To complete this build I am having D@D 2-1 fat cat install with false pipe, se tuner and se ventilator air cleaner.  My dealer called me on the Andrews cams and head gaskets. They said since they would do the install they would warranty all of this. They also warned me that other dealers may not because of the cams and head gaskets.  I would like to see 100hp and 120 torque. I know I won't see those numbers without cams.

Does anyone have any experience with se cams other than the 255s I have now with good results? My dealership didn't have a recommendation other than staying with se because of warranty?

I've told them to order the pipes, air cleaner and tuner.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Crunch,

Do you mean your dealer would not warranty the Andrews and Cometic install? A lot of other HD dealers will probably not warranty your dealers work even if he stays with HD Cams. Your dealer should warranty his work even if he installs the Andrews Cams or the HD ones, with the proviso, if you have any problems on the road and another dealer will not warranty the work, be it with Andrews or the HD Cams, you pay for it and he reimburses when you get back home. That is the way the dealers do it in our part of the world. So far over all of the years I never had any warranty claims on engine work performed by dealers or independent shops.

screamin' eagle doesn't really have a cam that is comparable to the andrews 54...the se204 is a good torque cam and is about the only one that will work with stock compression or even adding the thin head gaskets...the 251 or the new 259 could work, but would require high compression pistons...these are not torque cams and would actually make less power below 3000 rpm than your stock cams...a good tune and the excellent exhaust you've chosen can make 95hp/115tq...a better cam will give a few more horsepower, but 120tq is not very common without headwork and high compression

Thanks for both your input Geezerglide and Skyhook.  I will ask my dealer about reimbursement if I have a breakdown while on the road that is associated with the Andrews cams or thinner head gaskets. My other thought is have it installed and not worry about it.  My reason I wanted the to gainmore low end torque and to have something a little different than my 07 seultra.

Thanks again for your input.

Just for comparison, heres a dyno chart from a 2010 SE Ultra. Same bike within a 2 day period.
Stock, Stage I and Stage II with 54 cams. These are very typical numbers, modified stock headpipe, 2.0 muffler cores. You will see 100 hp+ no problem with the 54 cams.
120 TQ? You never know. I have seen 120 TQ from a Stage II build, but only once.
Must have been built on a Monday?

Steve, that cam makes decent power for sure for a bolt in, but that curve resembles a 255 curve, Not the improvement I'd be looking for. I'd want it to be much straighter at 4K RPM to 5500. ;)

I don't wish to diss on anyone's parade, but doesn't a higher compression ratio require a higher octane fuel?
A good rule of thumb is for every 1.xx of compression requires 10.xx of octane of fuel. A thought to consider when changing the cams on any engine. Think of octane as a rate of burn of the mixture.
Just a thought. ;)

Usually, but not necessarily...  It comes down to cylinder pressure.  Later closing intake and exhaust timing built into your cam will reduce the resulting cylinder pressure and allow you to run a higher compression ratio  -  without fear of piston/valve damage.

Higher compression ratio's combined with valve timing that creates high cylinder pressure absolutely requires higher octane fuel...

As always, it's the combination of all the pieces.... :2vrolijk_21:

There are lots of bigger cams that will pull harder and longer on the top. You have to be willing to give it up at the bottom.
Usually not a good trade off for an RV that spends the majority of its life at 3000 RPM pulling a load.
But if your drag racing, lots of better choices than a 54.

Hi Crunch

I just ordered everything for my Andrews 54 install.
I am getting Andrews 54 cams, Cometic .030 head gaskets, heads machined for proper squish,
Heavy Breather & SE Pro Super Tuner.
I already have V&H Power Duals & Fullsac 2.0 baffles.
From what I have read on this forum it should make the bike run like a 110 should.
I will keep my fingers crossed for the both of us.

Good luck

I talked with the dealership doing my work yesterday and told them to install the 54's and .030 head gasket.  I've decided if I didn't do it the way I wanted it I'd always be thinking I should have.  As with the warranty, I'm not going to worry about it.

Thanks everyone for your input.
