Have the dealer do a leak down test, But HD will tell you a qt every 1000 miles is in specs. My 09 uses none between 2500 mile oil changes, with Redline oil. I do not think that changing oil to a differant brand now will help you.   Doc

If it puffs engine oil smoke at start up try this also.  Let it idle for thirty seconds or then quickly rev the engine again.  You'll likely see another puff of blue smoke.  Sign of oil going through the valve guides.

Having said that a quart in 2800 or so isn't extreme.  You don't really want to see it on a modern engine.  But if that's all it did and it was consistent over the long term I'd not lose any sleep over it either.

When the engine is cold where on the dipstick is the oil level?  It's not at all uncommon that a dealer fills them full; when often they shouldn't be.  Pushing oil out to a "happy place" of about a half quart low when cold is common for these engines.  If you started there it might be that your usage is actually only a half quart or so in that same 2800; or roughly a quart between 5000 mile oil changes.  That's no worry at all.

Still worth keeping an eye on and checking out though.  You've got a warranty.  No sense in not using it for a problem.

A leak down test would be a good idea, don't think the oil type has anything to do with it. Oil should be at it's thickest when cold, if it goes away after warming up, it likely rings are expanding and sealing better. Valve guides will allow oil to leak down from the top end when the motor is off if the seals aren't doing their job, this would cause some smoke at start up, but should dissipate fairly quick.

talked to the dealer.he told me he would do a leak down test if i wanted.he noted that the bike was doing this.he made the suggestion to drive it for a couple of years and then have it done before warrenty is up.i like that idea.when they do the rebuild i will go for 113 parts and have them installed for free.

Rather than allowing the dealer to document your acceptance of what you feel to be too much oil consumption for two years why not get the leak down test done to know what's what?  Then, more properly informed, decide how to proceed with service.

the dealer said to me if i feel it is getting worse to bring it in for a test.i do not like anyone tearing my new 32k bike apart.if it is bad guides or rings and it does not get worse i will do what he suggested.after it is a couple of years old it won't be so bad in my mind to have them tear it down, and by then i will be ready for a upgrade.every time i bring something in for something major, such as a motor teardown they always manage to scratch something, just the nature of motor work.i am VERRY FUSSY.you have to understand this is my 2nd new 09 harley.my first 09 roadglide had a bad crank.the dealer told me the vibration was normal.i said B.S.i had gone from a 2000 roadglie to 09 roadglide.my 2000 glide had 57k on it and it was smooth as glass.09 glide had a vibration.hard to see out of mirrors.reminded me of my 92 softail.i went to another dealer and they said the same thing.did some reserach and came up with crank runout.so,i have learned that i can buy a new one faster than they can fix the old one.funny isn"t it.so i traded it for the 09 serg.turned out i was right.it took them 5 weeks to get a new crank.if that was my bike i would have been out 5 weeks of riding.in the northeast season is short.i really like this bike and i cannot trade it for another because as you know no more serg.so i will have to deal with this problem.

My situation was the bike was fine until the official recall for head modification after that the smoke started, torn down to find out why, that is when the ring was fitted upside down (rear cylinder) after that it started leakeak oil at the base gasket. torn down again, new rear jug etc, had a 2000 mile trip into Germany and back in which time the bike had used two bottles of oil. Torn down again front cylinder was burning oil. I couldn`t stand this re occurence any longer so i traded in at 9800 miles for an 09 seuc siler/blue  with under 4000 miles hopefully this one will be ok but i wont know until its riding season again. Old and new shown in photo.
