to much throttle tension
« on: December 29, 2009, 07:55:18 PM »

Has anyone noticed a problem of having to much spring return tension on their throttle? I traded in a 2006 SEUC that had the dual cable throttle. The 2010 SEUC that I now have, obviously has drive by wire instead of the old cable style throttle. It seems like it has a lot of return spring tension, and after 50 miles my wrist is starting to feel it. I find myself setting the cruise control, when normally I would not. Maybe I am just getting old, but was wondering if I am the only person to notice this. Was wondering if anyone knows any way to weaken the return spring tension?

If you really want to see if there is a difference, take a small fish scale (or similar), hook a shoestring to the hook, and the other end, wrap around the grip, pull the scale and see how many #'s you get with each system.
There MAY be a problem with your new bike, or, maybe your old one (with cables) was just lighter.
I have a weaker spring in my S&S carb, just so it matches the pull on the new wireless throttle.

Or..............maybe it's like you said??? :orange:

I noticed the same thing when I first got the SERG but after riding it for the last year, it's fine - not any better just used to it

I agree. There's an uneccessary amount of spring tension in the electronic throttle grip. It's really not necessary at the level its set to from the factory and should have been made adjustable as it is on my 2003 Fatboy. Even with the cruise control, I have found it more comfortable to add a throttle rocker to rest my wrist without having to use cruise. It's inexpensive and adds alot of wrist comfort to my 2010 SEUC. http://www.throttlerocker.com/

:2vrolijk_21: I am not an expert at all but check with your dealer to see if they can adjust it or if there might be an issue. I believe that mine was altered a bit when I had some work done. Not sure but I remember thinking that it felt different. Maybe it was the stage 1 breather change. Anyway, I would ask them.

If anything my 09 could use a little more tension its very sensitive at slow speeds on uneven surfaces, maybe they made a correction on the 10,s

You could adjust the throttle blade control and maybe tune that out of there. It takes some trial and error.

That sounds like a good idea you have. Can you give me an idea of exactly how to do that? I am assuming that since there is no throttle cable, and it is all electronic, that any type of throttle tension would have to be internal in the hand grip???  Maybe I could replace grips with 2009, if they have less tension as someone posted?? I will try to run by the H.D. shop this next week and see if anyone has any ideas or suggestions.

I'm not sure, but, I think the part #'s are the same, '09 and '10, if you go to the dealer, check the parts book.
You can "tune" the twist grip to follow the TB blade using the SSERT or TTS tuners.
I don't know if the dealer will do that for you under warranty, or you CAN do it yourself. It just takes purchase the hardware/software.
The "tension" would remain the same, just a different following of the throttle blade, kinda like a sloppy cable in the older bikes.
You can have the TB follow the twist grip 100% or any percentage you choose. Most have a slower response at lower RPM's/loads, to keep the bike less "twitchy".
I hope this helps a bit.

I had to have the throttle replaced on my '08. The replacement was pretty tight to the point that I could not work it smoothly. That dealer said the there was nothing wrong "it dosen't have throttle cables so it can't be stiff" Duh.. I had another dealer check it and they replaced it on the spot as they thought it was dangerous! You might want to have the dealer check it. If you can't move it freely with the thumb and one finger, there is something wrong with it.
