heated handgrips
« on: January 05, 2010, 02:23:02 PM »

How warm are the handrips supposed to get.  Im on my second pair and today went riding (taking it in for oil leak) and with thin gloves hardly could feel any heat whatso ever with the grips turned all the way up to 6.  Seat works great but not happy at all with the handgrips.

Very dependent on the outside temp. If the air is below 40 degrees, you'll hardly be able to feel the grips at normal highway speeds, even with lightweight gloves. I find that heated grips work best when used between 40 and 65 degrees. Below 40 you're better off with winter or heated gloves.

Consistant complaint on the grips, i'm on second pair and will have them looked at again shortly, but seat works perfect, I've adapted and now just alternate my hand under my butt with the seat on...

well it was 28 degrees out and your right might as well not have been on. Is that the way they are supposed to work.  I do notice when its warmer they seem to be warmer.  Why even have them  again the seat is great even have to turn it down would think the grips should be the same

I still like heated grips as I do alot more riding in temps between 40-65 degrees than I do below 40 degrees. Its nice to have those grips on a cool Spring or Fall morning and then be able to turn them off as the temp climbs. Much better than riding with bulky gloves in the morning and changing to lighter gloves in the afternoon.

Heated grips don't fit all riding temps but they definitely have their place.

This is an on-going saga about the Grips. They are there for looks and to have something to play with but there practicality is nill to none. As what was stated about using them between 40-65 degrees with fingerless gloves they feel pretty good.

Unlike the seat, the handgrips are exposed to air flow which quickly cools surfaces, which is why your hands get cold long before your butt. At the 28 degrees you were riding in at 65mph, the air flowing over your hands felt like 7 degrees http://www.springfrog.com/weather/wind-chill.htm

For Harley to make the grips put out enough heat to compensate for temperatures like this, they would almost certainly cause burns to your hands when you were standing still. By design, the most that a heated grip should put out is as much as can be reasonably tolerated while standing still at the highest setting. Unfortunately that is simply never going to be enough heat in temps below 40 while traveling at 65mph.

Now maybe if they could come up with a "smart" grip that could maintain a specific temp that takes into account wind chill effect, then maybe you could have grips that put out more heat. Until then, more heat from grips would only result in lawsuits from numbskulls that burn their palms when they forget to lower the temp of the grips when they stop at a traffic light.

yes i agree about them being to hot and your hands are on them if something went wrong and you couldnt hold on the the grips that wouldnt be a good thing.  Just think they should be a little warmer.  who knows what the perfect temp should be.  Just wanted to make sure i didnt get  a set of grips again that are not doing what they are supposed to do.  Thanks for the help.

The HD grips I had on my 08FLHTCU (the Chrome and Rubber style) got quite hot - on 6, you couldn't hold them without gloves.  When they worked anyway  :'(

The one on my 10 SEUC barely get warm.  Maybe that was the HD fix to get them to last!

all im trying to figure out is if they are working correctly or not.   which i feel maybe they are they just dont get that warm when its cold. only use them when its warm out.  Maybe next year they can save money and dont put them on.  Saw posts about other grips that people really like and work.  Just thought these should also

Windchill is a measurement of heat removal on bare skin.  Doesn't apply directly when wearing gloves, although there is a greater heat loss than when sitting still.

i agree    but when its cold the air would cool down the grips pretty fast without your hands on them
