Rough Idle
« on: January 17, 2010, 03:20:08 AM »

I've got a 2009 SEUG with the upgraded 58mm throttle body and larger injectors (plus air cleaner for the larger throttle body).

I can't remember how the idle was before the upgrade but i've noticed it can be a little rough..

The tacho moves up and down a little (probably 50-100rpm) rather than real steady..

Is this normal?

I've been playing with different calibrations and can't seem to make it go away?

No, your right it is not normal for an idle to hunt up and down like that.
What else did yo udo to the bike beside the HUGE throttle body? Did you have the bike re tuned after the installation of the 58mm? Did you set the injector size in the tuning constants (if you have a SEST or TTS)?
Here's what happens when you use a throttle body too big and especially a larger injector that isn't needed for your build......at the lower rpms the injector is unable to deliver the fuel in the manner the engine needs it. Since the injector is larger it doesn't have to stay open as long as the smaller injector to get the same volume of fuel however if the injector is too large it will dribble gas not spray it and this makes the engine run rough at idle and lower rpm's. If your running a build with 125 hp/130tq then the injectors you have now are probably fine but if your build is still below 100/100 you went too far with the TB and injector size.

HDMC has an allowable idle fluctuation for electronic throttle control bikes.  Off the top of my head I beleive it's about 200 rpm.  Once your bike is up to temp and in closed loop at idle, it may actually be normal if the fuel adjustments aren't out of range.

Thats news to me........I'd like to where you got that information at.

Hi

Thanks for your reply..

Yes, dealer retuned it by putting in a new map. But pretty much all they did was change the injector size on the map that was already in there before the upgrade.

I've since put in the map with the 58" body already mentioned in the calibration description.

The only thing I havn't done yet is increase the compression.

Dealer reccomended the upgrade too..

From the MOCO

I've tuned 50 or more of the DBW bikes.....been from Vancouver BC to Orlando Fl,  and to Prescott AZ to New York training Dealers and Indy shops on EFI tuning with the TTS Master Tune and I must say I never seen this 200 rpm fluctuation your talking about......either you heard the MoCo incorrect or the TTS Master Tune is just that much better than the MoCo's Maps.

Having that big of a throttle body on a stock bike is a complete waste. The dealer that recommended it for a stock bike was way out of line as the bike as it is cannot event come close to using it! What a larger throttle body and larger injectors are for is a high output motor and a CVO is nowhere near that in stock form. The larger throttle body will hurt idle and low speed performance no matter what you do with the ECM code on a stock CVO. With larger injector you have less control of the fuel at idle and low speed so it very well could cause the idle to move around and as far a 200 RPM spec. from the motor company, that is wishful thinking, maybe from another dealer just like the one that sold this customer a throttle body for a stock motor! The idle control circuit in the ECM will adjust for movements in engine speeed as small as 5 RPM and most will only wiggle around about +\- 25 RPM TOPS!
