front suspension 'clunk'
« on: January 24, 2010, 07:09:42 PM »

My 09 fxdfse has developed a 'Clunk' sound from front suspension when hitting bumps on road. Any ideas as to what is causing it. It has only recently become noticeable.

Neck Bearings would be the first place to look....

Get the bike in the air.
There is a procedure in the service manual to check the front end.
Do not rule out the neck bearings as a last resort, I have seen some with a rough spot on the races, long time ago, but, I remember!

Maybe I should have been more specific...check for loose neck bearings or steering head adjustment. The first place to look in my opinion.

Generally the "Clunk" is from either low or worn out fork oil.

I agree. Had the same thing with my 06 SG. The neck bearing nut was loose. I know a guy that the nut wasn' t even finger tight right off the showroom floor. Things like this happen somtimes on an assembly line.

Mine "clunks" after installing the Ricor valves and amsoil.  the mechanic said he used the prescribed amount of oil.  Could it still be low?

Sounds overly simple but, pull up on front of gas tank. If front tank bolt is loose a little, it will clunk over bumps. I have 07 fxdse did the same thing, drove me crazy- sounded like the front end. Easy to check, the bolt wasnt loose, just not quiet tight enough.

I'll   give you all   the   verdict   on    Monday. The    bike   is   still   under    warranty   so    I  booked    it in   on Monday.

After spending 2hrs in traffic in pissing down rain to get the bike to the dealer and then them having it for the whole day there verdict was that they could not find anything out of spec.

F..king typical. I told them 'so you mean to tell me that getting a 'clunk, clunk.clunk' noise evertime you drive over a slight bump is perfectly normal even though it never used to do this.' There response was that they could not find anything wrong or outside specification.

Needless to say I won't be going back to that stealership. I have a mate who recommended a good harley mechanic so i think i'll give nim a look at it. I think the neck bearings is the most likely cause.

the clunk is caused by the swimming brake , they do have a very little (must be ) clearance - it is normal .

My '10 Limited has the same problem (from the first day I got it new) and yes, the stealer says there is nothing wrong.  At least I learned something from their service department.  It still clunks, but I don't take it to a stealer for any reason.  I either do my own work, or I find an indy to do it.

But why then has it only just started to happen?

my 77 clunked on every bump - it was the banana caliper banging up and down  ;D

new bikes like my 07 are so quiet and refined that a small irritant is noticable - my 79 lost all 4 of its turn signals one day and didnt notice till i got home

first see if anything CAN move - if it CAN move it will - the pads might clunk, the bearings might be loose - keep looking
