Starter kickback/noise when cranking
« on: January 15, 2006, 09:30:41 PM »

My 05 SEEG2 cranks fine when cold.  When engine is warm, shutoff for a few minutes, then recranked, the starter is very noisey (teeth chatter) and acts like the starter drive kicks out when cranking.  The noise is terrible.  I changed the primary oil in Oct and there was metal shavings on the drain plug.  The dealer in late Oct looked at the problem and said the starter ground cable was loose.  It still acts up when the motor is hot.   It is not the battery.  My 88 FBoy motor will kick back on the starter when it is hot, but does not make this terrible noise.  I did  a search and a couple of others had this problem but could not read where the problem was actually solved.  Anyone else have this problem and what was the fix if any?

Boatman,
You aint alone, My 04has had this problem since it came home. Had the dealer replace it soon after I had it. The new one does the same thing. I've got no answers from them to date. I was even thinking maybe going with the chrome one, not that the chrome will help the noise, But sure will look better making the noise ;D
Had one guy at a bike run tell me it was how I pushed the starter button?????
Dont push it so hard he said. No joke.
I dont know if I just happen to get a couple bad starters, but it doesnt do it hardly at all if I wait even 10 minutes longer to start up. Be it temp or compression falling off, so a weak starter unit seems to be the reality of it.

Given what you're describing I'd be concerned about the pushing in the primary housing that the starter shaft spins in.  Would account for the shavings and the noise.  Will also lead to drive damage and ring gear damage if it gets bad enough.

I had a car starter a few years back that had a similar problem.  Turned out that when the motor was hot the starter pin that is engaged when you turn it over was expanded (a thou or two I guess) and was sticking slightly and not backing out after start.  When it was cold it was those couple of thousands smaller and didn't stick.  My starter was fine, they replaced the part the starter engaged with (can't remember the name of it).  I'm sure this is of no help whatsoever [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

It only happened a couple of times, and I have not told the HD shop yet.  I am not liking taking my bike there.  Don't get me wrong, the folks are as nice as can be, but they want me to bring my bike in, they look at it when it is convenient for them, they work on it at a pace I don't understand and if something goes wrong in the install process, they have no sense of urgency of getting replacement parts from somewhere to get the repair completed quickly.  So I know I have a replacement for my front fender coming in some time, so then - and only then will I mention that the starter still makes noise - sometimes.  It is not consistent enough to really put my finger on.  Before, it was doing it all the time and getting worse quickly.  Will just monitor it for now.  I do like the chrome starter they put on for me though.   :D

Can't know which is the chicken or the egg of course.  But it sounds as if your original starter drive dinged the ring gear or some damage to the ring gear dinged the original starter drive.  In either case now the new starter only occasionally stops on the bad spot on the ring gear and you get the noise.  When they look at the starter for the noise again make sure that gear gets eye-balled very well.

Here's my take on this. If your bike does not instantly fire then there's an issue with the ignition set-up. Every fuel injected bike I have owned ( 6 years 5 different bikes) fired instantly as long as I waited for the fuel pump light to go off. If your bike is cranking you might want to have your tech check it out for you  Only other thing I can think of that causes a bike to crank before it starts is bad plugs

I know this may sound wierd but give this a try; crack the throttle just a bit when cranking the bike when it's hot. It seems to work on my bike.

Too funny...I didn't know the starter button was pressure sensitive...I agree with 2 lane, the ring gear should be checked also. If the dealer warranties it, pay the extra and get a chrome one [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

The starter button isn't pressure sensitive, but I did find with my bike that I was just "punching" the button rather than holding it in until the bike started.  That method worked fine on my old Dyna (carb), but with this EFI 103 that method resulted in a no-start and kick-back about 50% of the time.  Once my feeble brain made the connection, and I started holding the button in until the bike actually started, the issue went away.
