OK, so we got the insurance covered. I see that a lot of you all have 5 and 7 yr extended with wheels an tires. I have a five/with. A lot of the same have done cams, heads,pipes--and so on. Why buy the warranty if you know that the Moco wont honor the warranty. Not just for the wheels, although it may pay for itself that way. Is there a rider for the warranty that covers these Mods, or do you just take a chance?
First, there is a difference between warranty and extended service agreements. The warranty is provided by H-D to the purchaser at no additional charge, and is subject to Federal law. The Extended Service Plan is optional at a significant extra cost, and is administered by someone other than Harley-Davidson. It is also not regulated under the Federal warranty laws. Coverage for the warranty is not necessarily the same as coverage under the ESP, so it might be wise to ask all your questions about what's covered and what isn't before you spend the $1500 average price.
Typically, minor external mods like mufflers and air cleaners have never been reason for the MoCo to void someone's warranty. However, with tougher emission rules in effect it is always possible that any changes you make that would cause the bike to not be in compliance will also cause H-D to refuse warranty service. This isn't just because they're cheap SOB's looking for a way to duck their responsibility, it's also because they don't want the EPA to find them complicit in your tampering which would subject them to some huge fines. I would suggest that any changes you make, if you want to be confident that your warranty will truly protect you, be only minor external changes that can be easily undone. Cams, heads, compression, etc. are best left alone if the warranty is really all that important to you.
Some folks will tell you they had the dealer do all kinds of major mods and the dealer told them they would still cover it under warranty. Be aware of a couple fairly important points. The dealer has no right to alter the factory warranty, or to make the factory responsible for their statements. So the only way that dealer can cover the nonlegal modifications under warranty is to submit fraudulent claims to H-D, or to pay for the repairs themselves. Trust that dealer if you want, but don't be surprised if you get hung out to dry. And btw, that dealer is also guilty of emission system tampering if he does anything that isn't an approved street legal kit. Last time I checked, fines could run up to $10,000 per vehicle per day of noncompliance.
If you decide to do the heavy duty mods and blow off the powertrain warranty, that doesn't mean you also have to lose the rest of the warranty or ESP. Those mods shouldn't affect the warranty or ESP as it relates to the other systems, such as electrical, paint, suspension, etc.
