Wingin a Tourpak, making it custom
« on: January 31, 2010, 09:09:19 AM »

I have an Ultra Classic tour pack that Ive wanted to add to my bike.  However, I wanted it to look as if it belonged to the bike rather than was just a box from an Ultra, so I decided to make it my own.  Plans were to match the taillights of the bike, so I though it may be nice to add some wings, much like the Cadillac’s of the 90’s.  I also decided to build some speaker pods to match the ones I built for my fairing lowers.

The start:

Im finishing up the sides, and feel comfortable with the flow of the TP.  The leading edge of the wing compliments the radius of the speaker pod.  Id like to leave off the exposed hinge and latches.  The question becomes what to use as a hinge and what will spring the lid open.  I dont want to take up room in the TP with gas shocks, or intrusive hinges.  Im thinking that a simple spring loaded latch will pop the top, with me having to manually open the top.  Anyone have any suggestions or experience with top opening cabinet hinges or the like that would prove effective with this application?

Im nearing completion of the TP speaker pods.  I still have some smoothing to do.

Without simply upgrading the hinges on the left side and using the stock latch's, I'm not sure what else you could do besides the gas struts and an internal hinge of some sort that you had mentioned ( master that and you could have an aftermarket item $$$$$ ) , all else looks good and will watch for more, interesting to say the least.

I've got an old cracked tourpak that I started to fix in the fall.  After seeing what you're doing, I'm rethinking what I want to do.  Nice job.
