I don't believe anyone really knows.  Myself, I use Amsoil in everything.  I used to use Mobil Formula 1 until my 103 had something run through it at 27000 miles and had to be rebuilt.  I have a 2005 nana classic.

I agree with Trapper John.   Redline all the way.  Of course,  some might prefer Mobil 1 in the engine,  but hard to beat Redline HD shockproof in the trans and their MTL in the primary.  Lately,  they have come out with motorcycle versions of each.   But basically the same stuff. :P

I've run RL heavy shockproof for a few years now in the tranny.  Shifts way better. Makes no sense to use a motoroil in a gearbox unless you have a Japanese bike and have no other option. Kind of like brushing your teeth with shampoo just because it was handier.
Last year I finally started using the SYN ATF in the primary and it works much better for clutch operation.  Bike goes into neutral first shot every time.  As far as convenience while on the road goes, if you've lost primary fluid or trans fluid somehow, you have bigger things to worry about. You're going to become real in-convenienced soon enough anyway.

IMHO, the only fluid that is really critical in terms of easy availability is the motor oil.  That's why I use Mobil 1 versus Amsoil or Redline, which you won't find on the shelf at your typical gas station or auto parts store.  Mixing different brands is something I would only do in an emergency, and only until I could get somewhere to do a complete change.  You never know what strange reactions can occur when mixing different additive packages together.  If the primary or trans is losing fluid to the point that you need to replenish on the road, as noted above you've got bigger issues to worry about than just mixing brands.

I think most people on this forum have been around motorcycles long enough and are probably fussy enough with their bikes that they would notice a fluid leak well before it became a problem anyway.  If these engines burn more than a quart of oil between regular oil changes we start freaking out  and think about lawsuits. :huepfenlol2:

I frequently take my bike on 1,000- 3,000 mile trips (when I get the chance, anyway) and I don't even bother bringing an extra quart of oil anymore. I've had much more use of having proper tools and a portable compressor if somethings going to have to suck up space in my bags.  My tools and compressor have bailed out a few people we take trips with as well as myself, when things start rattling off or you have a tire leak. Never had an issue of fluid loss.

Anyway, might as well put what you feel better with in the different cavities.  When you spend $30-$40k on the bike, what's another $10 at oil change time? The bigger concern is where all of this used oil goes, so you gotta make the effort to dispose of it in the best way you can.  I always have thought my engine sounded better and ran smoother and cooler after an oil change, but really I know it's just my head running better.  $50 worth of synthetic oil that only has 3,000 miles on it is still more than adequate to go another 2 or 3 thousand miles. But if it bothers me enough for the extra 2 thousand I might as well spend the $50 earlier and enjoy my $40,000 that much more.  If we're going to roll nickels and dimes arouind like they are manhole covers, we might as well just ride around on a Vespa or something that costs a lot less. :P
