550 Zumo went dead? WTF?
« on: March 04, 2010, 06:35:25 AM »

Hey Guys
My 4 year old 550 Zumo went dead while riding last Sunday. Poof gone, no mas. It has power and batteries. Tried my other cradle, CPR, cussed at it, all to no avail.
Any ideas or similar experiences. Cant find a fuse in it. Are these like Bic lighters? Time for a new one?

The fuse is located on the end of the power harness. If the fuse is still good then try removing the battery for a minute and re-installing it, some times removing the battery will return the Zumo to operation. Have you tried a reboot? If all else fails give Garmin tech a call they are very helpful.

Had a display go bad beyond warranty.  Garmin replaced the unit at no charge.  Give 'em a call they're excellent in supporting their products.

This has happened to me once or twice over the past couple years with my 550.  Usually it is prone to happen is left in excessive heat... window dash etc...

If you haven't done this already, try removing the battery and let it sit out for 5 ~ 10 Minutes and then reinstall it.

I also found once that my wife's zumo died after we found that one of the wires going to the battery on the bike came loose...

Lastely try this forum site; lot's of great support:
http://www.zumoforums.com/index.php?topic=339.0

And Garmin support will take good care of you if needed. They've done me right over the years.

Good luck.

Below are the instructions for resetting if needed. As others have mentioned probably (hopefully) the battery removal will be all you need as this has worked most times when the units have locked up. If you do have to call Garmin I'd suggest you call early (right when the lines open) as the wait can be long if you wait to call later during their business hours.

Hi Steve,

since one of last year's updates (for the unit, not maps) this is reported quite frequently, happened to me 2 or 3 times since last summer. Normally the Reset (pressing on- and plus-buttons simultaneously for some seconds) cures it, that was at least the case when it happened to me.

Some believe it to be cured by the last update - but I don't know as I did this update only after riding-season so I didn't ride much since.

:2vrolijk_21: Mine locks up quite often also. The battery removal works but I have found that 2 simultaneously pressed buttons works just as well and is easier when on the road. Hot or cold, mine locks up, not as frequently after the down load though.

You said in your first post "it has power and batteries" how are you able to tell that? How long ago has it been since you used it before Saturday when you had this incident? I'm wondering if plugging it up to the A/C charger overnight might remedy the problem due to a low/dead battery. :nixweiss:

Hey Steve,
If you plug it in to the A/C adapter, as Gary suggested, in the house (plug it into the wall) it will turn on even if the battery is dead.  Plug it in using the house adapter and then do the reset procedure that he posted for you while it's plugged in to your household A/C.

If it still doesn't come on either the charging system is shot, the battery is shorted or the electrical system is shorted, or the unit is fried.  The unit will have be repaired/replaced.

Good luck!

Ditto what JC said. :2vrolijk_21: And if all that doesn't work then call Garmin early in the morning for tech support I think they have a flat rate repair fee (send you a refurb) but I don't remember the amount.
