Comfort of stock SERG seat
« on: March 09, 2010, 06:41:27 PM »

I know....subjective question, but once riding season is here, I am flying up north to pick up my 2009 SERG, and will be riding the 1,000 miles back home (slow pace, 3-4 days). I will be riding 2 up.

I was planning to get the 2 pc Mustang touring seat w/backrest, but I thought I'd be smart to give the stock seat a shot first, since it does look nice, and doesn't cost me anything extra. I also considered sending the stocker to Mean City Cycles for a re-foam, but am thinking that it still might not end up as comfy as I hear the Mustang is.

So, I'm looking for opinions on if this seat is considered fairly comfortable for both of us to ride home on.

To give you an idea of my idea of comfort, I like my Corbin on my Yammi Warrior (I believe their motto of "firm is a good thing"), and I found the stock seat on my recent rental of an Ultra Classic to be too soft, and not supportive enough. It was killing me after about 2 hours of riding.

BTW, I did a search, but didn't come up with anything.

After about 300 miles you will hate the stock seat, take the mustang and send the old one home via UPS.

the problem with the stock seat is the seatpan is too flexible.  IMHO dont spend more money on something that wasn't designed properly.

I didnt really have a problem with the comfort of the stock seat as much as I did with how it sucked you down further the longer you rode it and you could look down and see your vent tube from the canyon between the seat and console.

Everyone has opinions on seats but... First day I had mine I rode 1101.1 miles. Only stopped for gas/food and had no issues but that was my experience... if you KNOW you like what the Mustang does for you then take it, and ship the stock one home.

The stock seat isn't too bad for comfort, rode 750 mile days twice with it and no major complaints.  Like was noted above, the worst part is looking down at that horrible gap!  I ordered the longer rear seat tab today so hopefully it will move the seat forward some to close the gap.

Yes, I think you're right- I do recall hearing that the basepan has a lot to do with the support and comfort of a seat, and of course, all OEM seats have plastic basepans.

Hey thanks- I would love to hear how you like it. Which package are you getting? IMO for me, I would want the premium double decker with gel service from MCC for both rider and passenger sections, so by the time all was said and done, I'd be out about $300- halfway to a Mustang.

Ive never had a Mustang, only a Corbin, but I've rarely heard a bad thing about them, so I would be willing to take the gamble on it.

Thanks guys, I think I'll pick up the Mustang- good thing is the seller is going to ship me the box with the stock baffles, windshield, etc back for free, as he owns a trucking company- so, no probs also sending me back the stock seat.

Never had a Mustang, but my Corbin was all I needed for the 1500 mile trip to Sturgis.  Before that, my butt got tired after 150 miles or so on the stock seat.  IMO, if you liked the Corbin on your last bike, maybe stick with what you already like and know?

I found the original very uncomfortable and installed a Corbin, now I can ride all day.  My suggestion, take a new seat with you and save yourself the freight and toss the original, it's a p o s. :coolblue:

I did 1000 miles when I brought my SERG home to GA on a 4 day ride from PA. The first day wasn't bad because of the smile on my face hurt more than the seat. After the second day, I thought about stopping at Home Depot to get a 2 x 6 with drywall screws for added comfort. After the forth day, I wished I would have gotten the 2x6, four inch drywall screws and some carpet tape. At least I would of had a tingly feeling after I got off the bike. The seat is good for 100 miles or so, but forget the long haul. The Mustang is bulky but comfy, so I'd take it. (or borrow/ steal some other seat) Andy.

The riders portion of the seat isnt bad but the passenger end of it sucks in everyway.
Froze my a$$ off early Sunday morning and rode over to Daytona and bought Mustangs new "Super Touring" seat. Everybodys super happy now.   ;) Go Mustang you cant go wrong. :2vrolijk_21:
