2007 SE 2 - alarm issues
« on: March 25, 2010, 05:28:41 PM »

My bike has issues once again. I removed the battery for winter storage 5 months ago, when both terminals were disconnected the alarm siren was still blaring even with the battery disconnected? WTF?
Today, I reinstalled the battery and when I turn the ignition to start it the alarm starts its countdown with both fobs present. Fob batteries @ 2.6vdc and bike battery @ 13.5 vdc. Bike will start if I use my P I N number. Any suggestions out there???

Morning Steve,
I believe the alarm module has its own battery inside itself so when you disconnected the battery last fall, the module thought someone was trying to steal the bike.  Before removing the battery, you must remove the 40 amp maxi fuse under the left side cover first and then disconnect the battery.  Another option is to quickly disconnect the battery after you have turned the ignition switch from "run" or "accessory" to the "off" position; the alarm will not arm itself for around 5 seconds after you turn the ignition switch off so you must move quick; you can tell if the alarm is armed if the security light is blinking every 2 seconds or so.  As long as you disconnect the battery before the security light starts to blink (ie, while it is on solid), you will be fine.  As for why the alarm counts down now and will only start with your PIN #, I have to believe the battery in the alarm module is dead.  I believer you can replace it.  The module is under the seat just to the rear of the battery I believe.  Hope this helps.

Thank you Tweet and StrokedRider for the quick response however no such luck for me. Today I removed the battery and searched for this alarm battery but cant seem to find it. As it is right now, the alarm light is flashing and fully active with both fobs present. I called the dealer on Friday but of course they want to see it. Any other suggestions out there? Also, I hope I'm replying correctly (first time for this). Thanks again

Yes indeed it does, in my request it states that "I can start the bike with my pin number. Thats not really a problem, what IS the problem is the bike is arming itself with the fully charged key fobs present. Rick and some other fine members believe it to be the alarm units own power supply. I just cant find where it is located. Today, I tried the whole process over again but no luck.

I believe you may find it on the back of the panel the ECM mounts to.... On an 07 SEUC, you have to remove the ECM - then remove the fasteners that hold the plastic panel in place the ECM mounts to - and behind it you will find the alarm and alarm battery.

Open the attached document and you will find pictures!

What is pictured in 8-77 is located behind what is pictured in 8-76  - on the first document.

I suspect the issue is not the alarm battery needing replacment.  I suspect the issue is the alarm has retained a code that needs to be cleared.  But I could be wrong...  :nixweiss:

Thank for the information, CVORick also shares the idea of a failed alarm battery. You see, I decided to remove the battery for the winter (I wont do THAT again) and this is what caused these issues. I'll let you know how I make out when I try this tomorrow after work.
Thank you Sadunbar!

Battery Tender!!   :2vrolijk_21:

If it is not your alarm battery, it may be the ECM has retained a code that needs to be cleared.  I had a friend with an issue very much like yours.  His dealer had to do something (I don't know what) to clear a code and also had to do some kind of download to his ECM.  I wasn't there and don't know the details....

Also...the alarm battery is a rechargeable battery - if it is dead or low it may recharge now that your motorcycle battery is back in your bike, but your motorcycle battery has to be at 12.5 volts to be able to recharge your alarm battery.

One other thing...for some reason, the PDF document says the ECM and alarm are under the left side cover...it's not...as you sit on the bike, it's all under the right side cover... :nixweiss:

Thanks for the additional information Sadunbar. I did locate the alarm battery and its voltage was at 8.2 VDC.  I tried a regular 9.6volt and there was no change. The bike is still screwy. Doesnt matter what I do, it immediately re-arms itself. At least  I can still enter my pin # to ride the bike. Any other suggestions out there???

Regards,

Steve  :(

It appears, since you can still disarm the system with the PIN and t/signal switches, that your fob's are no longer paired or assigned to the module.  If that is the case, I'm pretty certain you will have to get a dealership to reassign the fob's using the Digital Technician equipment.  If anyone has the '07 or later Electrical manual, perhaps they could check to see if it lists any other way to assign security fob's.  The old button system allowed an owner to assign fob's, but the only info I've seen on the new system makes it appear that the DT is required (see attachment).

BTW, the next time you want to disconnect battery power, you need to disarm the system before removing the maxi fuse or disconnecting the battery cable.  With the fob present, turn the ignition switch on and leave it on while you disconnect battery power.  It appears that the presence of the fob alone doesn't disarm the system, you also have to turn on the ignition.  From your original post it sounds like you didn't do this, and the alarm thought an unauthorized thief had cut the battery cable.  That's why the alarm has it's own internal battery, btw, so it can still sound the alarm if the battery cable is cut or removed.  I'm wondering if this removal of main battery power while the alarm was still armed isn't what has created your current problem.  I'm guessing yes, but can't say that for certain.
