06 FLHTCUSE HELP!!
« on: April 07, 2010, 08:53:56 AM »

Background.. 2006 "Watermelon"

1st motor lasted around 23K, shelled it with a bad cam bearing..
2nd motor cratered around 50K, shelled it with a bad cam bearing..

3rd motor, when it went in, I replaced to cam bearing with a torrington and changed to the S&S 570g cam & gear drive, with the newer oil pump. Great power in the midrange although sometimes hard to start.

Now after 36K miles,(86K total) I noticed a "chirping" sound coming from the cam location. My independent tech disassembled everything.
1. The run-out on the crank which started at .002, has now grown to .012 or above. Getting that trued, balanced, & welded.
2. Two lifters are shot and need replaced.
3. Cams are "scored" from the bad lifters and looks like I need to replace them also.

So.. once again I'm rebuilding this motor. Problem is, my tech is trying to make me believe that the 570g caused the top end issues and that the lift is too much for the SE 103" for reliability..

My question is.. reliability issues. I want to make this bike reliable and still enjoy the low to midrange power. I usually don't use top end speed but definitely do use to low & midrange ..

With the crank being corrected, what is the recommended cam & "other" parts to make this engine last?  :-\

Sorry for the long post, and tank you for all replies!

Wanted to add that I will be doing the "timkin" bearing also..

Maybe I need to start looking into having a "standby motor"..  ::)

Tank,

What a horror story, I have an 06 with 60,000 miles on it, original motor, S&S gear drive cams cam plate larger EFI true duals and all, crossing my fingers no issues to date.  Good luck on your rebuild.  By the way has the same guy worked on all three motors?

first two motors were replaced by HD via the stealer.. Went this route this time so I could control the build.

It seems that I am the exception to reliablity with this bike. I do ride a lot of miles and I ride her hard at times but I never had any issues with any of my "other" bikes before this one. Seems like I am missing something and I need to figure it out or just break down and keep a spare engine to swap out when this reoccuring problem come up.. :nixweiss:

It's an idea, but if I went that route I'd probably opt for the 131.. ;)

Probably the biggest issue her is my lack of knowledge to make her bulletprof.. I know this motor "can" be reliable, I just need to figure out how to do it.. :-\

Has anyone heard of the durability of the Redshift 575 CAMS? From everything I read here and on the web about them, they say they were made for the 103" SE motor. Is a 575 lift too much for long term durability?

After reading old posts for a week, seems like the top contenders are:

Redshift 575
Andrews 54 - andrews web page says need better cr than stock??
Woods TW-5g ?

Can anyone tell me if the stock lifters in this motor are the HD "B" lifters?

Any advice??

Depending on the cam you can reduce valve spring pressure, at least a small amount. Those 103 heads have a pretty stout spring and that loads the whole valvetrain. There are lower pressure conventional and beehives that will work. This may be closer to the root cause then the cam itself or lifters. Those heads have ports similar to the old SE MCR or EVO SE head and they respond to a cam like the Woods 5 very well, higher lift short duration, when low to midrange power is wanted. Springs will depend on the cam choice.
BTW Red Shift cams have very easy ramps but so does the S&S that you used previously.

Thanks for the help. I did talk to the S&S tech and he said that it was the lifter failier that caused the cam scoring. I'm thinking that maybe the exessive crank runout might have caused the lifter issue. I wasn't sure if it was worth the money to use different lifters or not? I really haven't read too much on lifter issues unless they were "Jim's".

Thanks again.

There's nothing wrong with the lifters, stock HD for your application. There's nothing wrong with the cam either and that would be a good runner with some minor headwork and added compression but at the same time the valve spring pressure could be pulled back and lower the stress on all of those components. There is no need to wallet whip this with other aftermarket parts, the solution is simple.
