With this kind of traffic and being behind all those hot 110's at the tail end of JC's line in Yosemite my temp was at 271deg

Anybody know @ what temp. does oil brake down at ?

There are many articles that address that:

"Even the best petroleum oils will have flash points only as high as 390 and 440 degrees F. Some actually have flashpoints as low as 350 degrees. For today's hot running engines, this is not nearly enough protection. Just about any synthetic you come across will have a flashpoint over 440 degrees. Premium synthetics can have flashpoints over 450 degrees with some even reaching as high as 500 degrees. That's a big difference. "

when I was running hd syn 3 my temp would get hot enough that my digital dip stick gauge would error then crap out completely and @ an idle my oil pressure was almost nil. Now I'm running Mobil 1 20w50 with 35% Lucas synthetic additive the hottest Ive seen is 240 cruising @ 40mph in 90 deg temps.Oil pressure has never dropped below 13 psi at an idle.the rear cylinder is a thigh cooker though .

Went for a quick 15 minute ride on my 09-96" EGC today to check out a loaner HJC fullface SI-Max for buffetting.
Of course this required a quick blast to 110 and a steady 100 MPH for a few miles to see if my eyeballs were going
to get shook loose like in my last fullface. Hellmet was little better, oil temp wasted no time in heading
for the peg. 285 when I shut it off back at the shop. Oh ya, it was only 116 in Havasu today.
I think my oil temp was pegged too!

Took the 103 out today.
Wish it would go that fast! :nixweiss:
105 degrees here, oil got to 253 (dipstick) hottest in stop and go traffic. Ran about 230 otherwise just flying down the road.
Had the fans on with the oil cooler.
Had taken the lowers off for this summer's trip

105 in San Diego? That's pretty hot for So Cal, or should I say caliente?

Steve, I had no idea it got as hot there as in Phoenix proper, my condolences.
There is no sanctuary. In a couple weeks, it'll be at the point where sitting at a traffic light will cause your tires to leave thumbprints on the skilletlike pavement.
It occurs to me as I review my histograms from TTS, that the head temps are routinely in the low to mid 300f range. Now, after a few V-Tune runs those temps have dropped by 20F or more (360s down to 320s) accross the boad, but think about it. We test oil temps outside the engine with a dipstick in a tank, when they have already been subjected to greater heat elsewhere within the engine. I've also seen articles backing up what Steve encountered with condensation forming in your oil with the use of coolers. Bad mojo. If you insist on one, buy Jagg or a similar one with "turbulence" vanes or passageways inside so it actually does something besides further belabor your oil pump's job.

It looks as though most are measuring oil temps in the oil bag. :nixweiss:

Having Dakota Digital gauges, I get the oil temps in the bottom end as well as head temps.  Last weekend my oil temps were 274F for fifteen or twenty minutes at a time (and consistently in the 250s range) pulling some of those long, steep, twisty grades in 100F + temps.  My head temps were less, the thre or four times I switched over to check them.

Oil looks fine. :2vrolijk_21:

Steve,

Sometimes I see those numbers on my bike too. I also have the Roger Mc. gauge and wonder if it reads differently than any of the others (although I can't see why it would). Sometimes it bounces at idle, but it still reads. I've been pegged at 300 degrees sitting in traffic. But after 15 mins of movement, the temps will drop some. Parking and letting the bike cool really helps.

Ok, I remember on our first ride in Nelson when we got to the top and pulled in to the rest area I reached down and pushed my diptick button and it said 305, somebody else had the gauge and the dipstick. dipstick said 265 and gauge said 235 :nixweiss:
