electronic throttle died
« on: June 19, 2010, 12:08:12 AM »

When I fired up the bike tonight, it started fine but the throttle was dead.  I shut it off and tried again but got the check engine light.  A few hours later, it started with no dummy light and the throttle was fine.  What the duece?

Anyone have this happen to them?  :nixweiss:

My '08 just poped a check engine and went into limp. It took 2 replacement throttles to get one that worked? Just get it replaced befor it kills you!

there are many possible reasons - what's the error code you got?

If it's a 05xy, it may just be a faulty connection.

Happened to me last month on the journey to Greece, just some 500 m away from the ferry: bike went to limp mode out of a sudden. Turned out this plug needed to be put off and on again:

Mine went into Limp Mode 5 times over the last few days during Laconia bike week. It has gone into Limp mode while traveling along the highway as well as just starting her up. This has happened before but this time rather than being towed I used the reset sequence I read on another thread, I believe it was SBB. We visited the SM last Friday since it failed that morning while we were on our way to the event. He printed pages of info and said it could be a number of things and told me that the reset code I used does not work and that I believe too much of what I read on these forums. So my 08 routinely goes into Limp Mode and Parade Mode am I missing anything else?

Good luck on your fix, for safety sake I hope they fix it.

My first question is, what did the SM say about fixing it, other than you can't believe what you read on the internet?  I'm willing to bet this isn't going to fix itself, so he needs to get you in ASAP and do the complete diagnostic for the Electronic Throttle Control.  Why did this SM not try to get it fixed on the spot, since it's a safety item?  And I think you're much too calm about this, since this stuff can kill people if it happens at the wrong time in traffic.

There have been a ton of reports of problems with the ETC on the '08 models, since Harley did about as much testing and debugging of that system as they did on the CVO110 engines for '07.  I would have to believe that the dealerships would have all kinds of technical communications from the mothership on this subject by now, and they should be familiar with proper diagnostics and recommended fixes.  There is no acceptable reason for a dealership to let a customer with ETC issues ride away without checking it out.  It's not rocket science, and it's a relatively simple system that should not take long to check.

As is true with all modern electronics in cars and now on bikes, good clean connections are essential.  If nothing else, I would do as Kraut mentioned and disconnect, inspect, and reconnect any electrical connectors associated with the system.  Could be something as simple as a poor connection.

Jerry

A poor connection was the culprit when my 09 went into limp mode.
Here's the thread----> http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=47886.0

Harley has issued TT-418 to help with this issue. Note that I typed "help with this issue" not resolve the issue.

TT-418 is attached below.

two weeks ago my 2010 seuc completely died in the fast lane on the highway. checked the battery terminals got it running no codes.but bike only ran at idle,no throttle.turns out the smaller grounds on the 2 frame studs under seat where completely loose. never tightened at factory nuts just hanging on,may not be your problem but you may want two check. once I tightened them I was back on the road.

An update to my last post. After the service manager did his down load he did recommended that I leave it to be repaired but could not tell me when he could get to it since it was bike week and that HD was very reluctant to replace all the parts he felt were necessary to do the repair to (his) satisfaction. I was not confident that the issues would be resolved at that time and decided to give some thought to other options including legal council. He did say that since my method to resolve the problem would not work he did not want us broken down someplace. Since this was my wife's only vacation time and we had rides planned we decided to go but be extra carefull in case I would have to pull over. I let the bike sit on Fathers day but last night we took it out for a quick ride, after about two hours it happened again, this time I had to do the sequence 5 or 6 times before I was able to make it home. I had planned to see the SM early on that day but they are closed on Mondays. At this point I will talk this over with him and see what he can do. If I don't feel comfortable with his plan I will look into the legal avenue. Jerry you are absolutely right, this is a seriously issue and I agree with you that I have been way to casual on the repairs. I was wrong and put my wife, myself and others at risk. I'm just so darn use to having the dealers fix things half way and I was not confident I would get it back repaired properly. We are a one bike family and I didn't want it there all week while they worked on other bikes.

Just called the SM and my bike goes in next Tuesday. He said he needs it for at least 48 hours and will fight tooth and claw to get what is needed. I will keep you updated.

Tanks for all the advice.

The majority, if not all of the bikes in my area that I am aware of suffering from this problem were fixed by following the repair procedure in the MOCO tech bulletin TT 418.
