big sucker vs se
« on: February 21, 2006, 04:37:40 PM »

I installed the SE air clearner K & N when I purchased the bike in 2004, wondering if the Big Sucker Stage I or II that Ness is offering is a better way.
I had alittle head work and a cam installed since I purchased so, I was wondering if more air would help the Reinharts?
Appreciate any info.

The difference is the breather passages on the big sucker are internal and route to the inner part of the back plate. This has the oil mist sucked back into the engine. The SE breaths into the air cleaner area and could allow oil mist to saturate the filter element.

The new SE units come with a POS cleaner element as well. For that reason alone I would go with the big sucker.

check out the Doherty Power-pak   I wanted to keep the motor on Elvis all HD, but I had one of Doherty's units on my previous Golden SERK and it was the best  Screamin_Beagle has one on his 05 Cherry Bomb and he thinks it's the balls

The Doherty Power Pac comes in polished billet with a velocity stack (short enough to make big TQ increase as well as HP).  Call Tim Doherty and get one.......This thing beats them ALL  (3 to 4 HP and same on TQ).  I spoke at length with Tim Doherty and read a few articles written on the subject,  and still can't understand why everyone only considers Ness and SE (they took the same bike,  the same day and only changed the breather kit{roughly 30 minutes apart},  and Doherty beat them ALL hands down)........The kit has optional "Power Vents" so you don't HAVE to pipe oil into your air filter.

IMHO

THE ABSOLUTE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK MODIFICATION YOU CAN DO TO YOUR BIKE........
plus the power vents look way cool.....

One more.........

Take a look at the short length of the velocity stack in pic #1,  that's where Tim's hit a home run.....typically velocity stacks are great for big HP numbers,  while pitts in TQ, the lenght is key....this sucker (no punn intended) is just long enough to increase velocity,  while short enough to have proper flow at low end (let's face it.......I ride my bike hard.....but I spend more time getting to max HP than I do at max HP,  on any bike,  TQ is key).  IMHO.......

Very cool looking Beagle.  Question: short of using the tubes with the elbow on the head breather vents behind the backing plate, is there any other way to route the breather vent tubing?  In other words, if you don't mind piping the oil breathers into the intake, can it be done without moving the air cleaner cover farther outboard?  I'd be interested in adding one of these but wonder if the extra spacing of the setup forces your right knee out further.

JD,
The whole thing sits in the same position as the stock breather.  When I bought it,  Spiderman had the same set up on his bike {03 SERK}, and on long rides (across the desert.......Haulin A$$....),  I noticed that there was a little oil on his motor (right on top of the timing cover),  the power vents work well (they reduce the crank case pressure created inside the motor at high speeds (is there any other way to run 'em).  So in fact, they do what they were designed to do.  That said,   I wanted to reduce the oil factor on the top of my motor, so I plumbed the power vents into the back of the air cleaner (pretty slick in my opinion,  used SS fittings and some clear tubing).  Since then,  Doherty has included the fittings and hoses with his kit (not polished SS{plastic},  but it works).  Fact is and I'll say it again,

BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK MODIFICATION ON THIS PLANET!!!!!!!!!

You guys must think I work for Doherty........He's in Az somewhere.........I live in Dago.......Maybe I should get commssion on his increase business

Thanks Beagle.  So, looking at the Doherty website, is it the kit with or without the power vents that would allow it to be routed into the intake?  They seem to make two for the injected bikes, one with power vents and one without, and I'm having a hard time visualizing the difference in how they install.  I appreciate the information.
