Oil Pan Gasket Leak -- Changing Pan in the Frame
« on: June 28, 2010, 06:02:48 PM »

Never had one of these leak before.  For a month have been chasing this oil leak.  Never could isolate it.  Wasn't drain plug o-ring, the fitting for the sending unit or the sending unit itself.  After a dinner ride or some other local half-a-tank run there'd be just enough oil spread around you couldn't tell precisely where it was coming from.  Could wipe it all down and it wouldn't leak sitting in the garage.  Had to be moving.  Crankcase vents were clear.  Even worried about seepage between engine cases but that wasn't it.

Finally decided to chase it down this afternoon.  20 mile run had the oil spread just far enough it couldn't be isolated.  Cleaned it up and a 10 mile run had it wind blown again that the spread made it unsure.  Cleaned up again and a five mile run left it clean enough to find.  Right-forward corner of the oil pan.  Stupid thing.

Never had an oil pan off in the frame before.  Assuming it'll come out with the back tire off.  Anyone know if swingarm has to come out also?

No big hurry.  A lot going on around here.  Appearance to the contrary it is a small leak.  Not worried about riding it but the Road Glide is here too.  So it'll get done sometime.

Stupid oil leak.....

If I remember right the OE gasket is a metal gasket.  Anyone used something known to be better or is that the best choice?  Pan gasket isn't someone one uses often so not a lot of replacement experience.

Stupid oil leak.

At least the bike has good timing.  A rear caliper is on the way back from Chrome Masters right now.  So that can go on at the same time.  Guess can also replace the pan with this red one that was powder coated when the cylinders and heads were done a couple years ago.  Had always figured a "convenient" time would present to change it.  Apparently the bike got tired of waiting....

Can align motor again.  So don't care about that one way or the other.  It's just that whole law-of-unintended-consequences thing.  The thing rides like it's on rails now.  Just hate to screw with more than I have to.  Especially since all the parts inside are only 10k or so old anyway.

At Chrome Masters is a back caliper and an axle.  Two calipers actually.  One for this bike and one for the eventual Road King project.  The axle was for the road king but I'll use it here too.  Then just send this one's out to get chromed again.  I'm not a big fan of chromed swing arms though.  Seen adjusters slip on them too often.  So that part will stay powder coat.

Ok, you can Scott convinced me.  Whenever I get around to it will count on pulling it all down.
