Another SESG air filter question
« on: July 04, 2010, 08:14:30 AM »

My dealer (whom I trust) is recommending an upgrade in my air filter for more air.  Looks like I'll lose the stock 110 cover.  Found a link that seems to say stock SG setup will work fine. Any advice appreciated on stock or a solution that'll work and look good. I'm not inclined to do the HD heavy breather.  Thanks.

You already have a highflow air box on your bike. No upgrade needed. Some dealers don't know this and asume it is not

Or they're trying to bump their profit margin.

I'm confused.  According to your profile, the bike you have is a FXSTSSE2, Softail Springer.  If that is correct, then you already have a Heavy Breather air cleaner as standard equipment.  That is the top of the Harley line in terms of flow, so I don't quite understand the need for an "upgrade".  Or are you talking about a different model bike that isn't reflected in your profile?

OK, that's a relief.  I thought I had finally lost what little was left of my mind. ;)

The air cleaner you have on the SESG is the Ventilator from the catalog, and it's the number two best flowing air cleaner Harley sells.  I don't see any need to "upgrade" unless you plan some very serious engine mods.  What is your dealership recommending you change to?

Many of us SESG owners are STILL waiting for K&N to make a replacement filter but other than that I agree that the stock one flows real good.

For those having problems with the stock one remember that you should use "the rain cover"  or the paper element will get soggy and clog up so air will not flow as well. A periodic inspection of the element will tell you if your riding habits require that you buy another element.

I'm putting a D&D 2:1 fatcat on my Spiced Rum with a ghost pipe  Dealer recommended an increase in airflow over stock required.  He recommended the HD heavy breather or K&N. Sounds like I'm good with stock, a look I prefer.

BTW, dumb question, how do you tell by inspection when filter needs replaced?

Since it's a washable filter, just being dirty doesn't mean you have to replace it.  But over time and after a few cleanings, if the filter is like the other washable paper stuff H-D has put out in the past 5-10 years, you will start to see some breakdown of the material at the creases of the folds and where it attaches to the elastomeric material.  Each time you clean the filter you should therefore closely inspect the filter material for small holes, tears, or fraying.  Also check the elastomeric material, they had plenty of problems on the round SE paper filters with the "rubber" disintegrating.  A good way to check the filter for damage and cleanliness is to place a light bulb (trouble light, shop light, etc.) in the center and look through the material as you slowly rotate it around the light source.
