It never ceases to amaze me how well we, (the members on this site{THE COLLECTIVE MIND} are at spending other peoples money!!!) SPIDERMAN is the worst culprit (No offense Bro!!!!, still love ya like a brother.....oh wait, you are my brother), anyway, my pics would be (on a $10K budget, wow, is that ALL you can spend.........sheeeeeeeiiiiit!!!!!!).
First, you got a bagger......it's a bagger.......it's always gonna be a bagger.......if you want a Hot Rod......You would have bought a Destroyer.......That said. Here are the things that I'd like to have on mine.....(sounds like your gonna ride 2 up and take some trips)........
Do the pipes and breather (pipes are made for everyones taste{I have Hooker True Duals on mine and like the adjustability, but they doo make some noise}....BTW, if you go with Hookers, make sure you buy the ones made for the 103" motors....they have 3 differen't models depending on engine size and intended use, the difference is in the head pipes and baffles and can be adjusted VERY easily for as much torque as possible....Heavy bike, two up,,,bags packed....you want torque baby...) As far as the breather goes, DOHERTY POWER PACC IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO. everyone on this site knows my preference to Tim Doherty's breather kit.... but do some homework, talk to people who have them and they will All tell you .There is no competition here....
If you want reasonably quiet pipes, the Rhineharts are a good choice (sound good, look good, perform OK).
BUY A GOOD SEAT....NO DISCUSSION. If your gonna do 6K miles with the navaguesser on the back, you want something comfortable (A good seat with backrest can run up to $1K, and the best money you can spend for long trips, don't cheap out here). There are a lot of good choices, can't comment on any, have a stock seat and a HD plastic balloon(one of their cheap seats {$200 and it aint worth much more.....but better than stock} . (boy I wish I had your budget) but the word from the "collective mind" as I call it here on this site is that Corbins, Mustangs, and AllDay......like pipes.....pick what you like. BTW, Had a Brother with one of those hard as a rock Corbin"s that felt like sh$t when you first got on, but do 600-700 a day for a couple of days, and they feel pretty good.
Do the 6 speed tranny. I don't have the kind of money to have one, however Spiderman has let me ride his bike on several occasions and it's worth every penny if you plan on long rides.
You gotta do a a EFI mod, I prefer the DYNOJET kit because of desgn (cost is a factor here too.). The DYNOJET Kit , can way out perform the race tuner at half the price {not to mention the Xtra $$$$ to have them DYNO TUNE your bike....(By some 20 year old sh$t STAIN that can't even install spark plugs properly......oh sh$t look closer, if the HD race tuner chit's the bed....your stuck in the middlle of nowhere, last time an Ignition pooped on "US" So.Cal we were 120 miles outside of Vegas and needed a part from Vegas......Guess who did the Xtra 240 miles to get the freakin part (by the way, if your handy with computers, the maps are available on line and you don't have to pay some 20 year old wrench at the local stealer {Just got out of HARLEY COLLEGE......yeah...RIGHT. what a joke}) to screw up your bike, and then put his hand out for money....kinda like going to Starbucks for a $5.00 cup of coffee and they have the nerve to put a tip jar out......
You sound like your gonna be riding right out of the block with the time frame you mentioned.......break it in....change the oils put AMSOIL in the big bastard ( after 1K miles) and roll for a while. You'll figure out how to spend the rest as you go...
As they used to say.......Good Trip Babe....(we'll at least they did where I came from....different day!!!!)
Just the basics.........
Enjoy the ride.......
