How Long Before H-D Makes............

a water-cooled bagger? If the EPA keeps tightening emissions...requiring leaner AFR's...which increase engine temps...I see no way around it. What do you think?

Personally I don't know why the he11 they have not done it already.  The traditionalist theory is complete bull.

Lets think about the tradition of air cooled motors... fits right up there with drum brakes, kick start, and oil leaks.  I for one don't miss any of those traditions.
I like my twin piston ABS brakes, electronic cruise control, remote locking key fob, and my closed loop fuel injection.  Now that we have closed loop fuel injection the missing link to better performance and better gas mileage and longer lasting engines is to make them run at controlled temperatures just like the modern cars.  Bring on the radiator already!

Mopar, Chevy, Ford, they all get it.  Modern cars that look like the cool old muscle cars.  If I could have an old Camaro or Mustang or Charger that would be outstanding, but if I was going to use it for everyday driving give me the modern version.

Come on Harley give us the modern version and finish it so it doesn't take another $1000 after purchase so it doesn't burn itself up.

Remember VW

Started with a air cooled 1300 motor, kept building bigger and bigger

By the time they got to i think 2400 they ran into the air cooled problem (to hot) . They went to watercooled

 This seems similar  :nixweiss:

I just posted this in the 2011 thread:

Quote
I too would LOVE to see a balanced motor, with slightly harder durometer urethane mounts. That would be a smooth as a baby's a$$.  A water cooled 2000 cc version of the Revolution motor that puts out a solid 130+ ft/lbs of Torque, with at least 100 ft/lbs by 2,000 rpm.  Add a new dash with a REAL integrated Nav, and I'd be all over that in a heartbeat!  A guy can dream, can't he?

Imho, they need to come out with a version of the Ultra with the new drivetrain, AND keep the existing air-cooled versions for a while until folks start warming up to it. It will definitely take some time with the purists, but eventually 99% will come around, IF there are performance improvements - HP/TQ increases, less heat issues, better economy, smoother, more reliable and durable, etc. I'm sure they can develop an exhaust system that offers a pleasing traditional sound and that would cap it.

Let's git'er done!

Way past due.  When they retired the kick start, should of moved right in with water cooled.

...and Porsche. I was hoping the hook up with Rotax would have started something. Those later model Buells are real screamers. Doc

Going to watercooled, does not effect the exhaust sound, well maybe. You would lose some of the engine clatter.
I don't think the MoCo wants reliability, and good power, they would lose part sales, and put a lot more service
people out of a job. After all, a good wrench would have to find a new job!

I am with you Doc. Those Rotax motors are awesome.

hehehe.... I think the introduction of the 110 with all it's issues was intended to lay the groundwork for the introduction of a water cooled bagger... :huepfenlol2:

Psycological preparation...

They've got us begging for anything... that doesn't leak, isn't noisy, has a crankshaft without runout...ect. ect. ect. ect. .....   :nervous: :zroflmao: :zroflmao:

Yep! I had a 62'BUG with hugh pistons and jugs. It was pretty fast but you could not stop and turn it off unless you were going to stay a while where ever you were. No heat to speak of, no AC, today they make flashlights that are brighter than the bug headlights.

The bad part of that is, it would take them about ten years after the first year of production, to get all the bugs worked out.
