Test drove a used 2008 Goldwing
« on: July 29, 2010, 10:22:38 AM »

Last Sunday my wife and I stooped by the Rochester HD dealership in NH to see what all the fuss was about the Goldwing. We had a hard time starting out because the open saddlebag warning was on. I drove it myself first and then went with my wife. Very easy bike to ride. The guy I was following was trying to loose me but no dice. First I jammed my left boot under the shifter and ground that up pretty good as I took a tight left hander, then I dragged the right side on a tight turn. When my wife got on I raised the suspension. This time the guy I was following was going even faster which resulted in more scrapping on both sides. It did handle the bumps better than my SERK but not by leaps and bounds. My wife liked it because it was the only bike we have test driven that she could talk to me while we are driving. You can take that either way you want to, but I'm good with the test drive. My itch has been scratched, now I want to try the BMW R1200RT. I know a few guys on this site are owners.  Looking for a back up bike.

I have had 1800's and they are indeed a great bike, with good tires and the suspension pumped up they can corner with the best of them.  Hard cornering however does lead to scraping multiple parts, I had one that the exhaust sheilds were worn through on.  The fastest time on the Dragon I believe was Yellow Wolf on a GL1800.

RayG, I know that this sounds like I'm a spoiled bastard(just can't help myself), but I have both a 2003 GL1800 and a 2009 R1200RT and they are both fine rides. The dry single plate clutch on the BMW is less user friendly than any wet type clutch I have tried in recent years. Don't get me wrong, I am a long time fan of BMW, this may just be a consideration for you. Your back seat passenger will not be happier anywhere than on the Wing! Also, there is virtually no heat felt from the motor or exhaust while sitting still! Resale value:the Wings are holding value quite well, no brag just fact. My low mileage example will still pull $3K less than I paid new!(paid $1800. under list) Seven model years later. We all know what I can't get for my 2004 SEEG, it sickens me, not that I would sell it, just what the MOFOCO has done to all of us customers by over producing bikes in general and the CVO's in particular. Now along comes 2011 and the Road Glide Ultra...Lord help me I want one

Nice seeing honest repiles regarding Wings.  They are one hell of a machine for sure, not a Harley, but a Harley is not a Wing either!  They are however one heck of a stable mate for a CVO!!  I'm looking at them now, just have not yet broke that news to the wife, she does not raide at all.

Rumor has it BMW is building a 1600, read that a few BMW Forums.....  interesting.

Bikes are like beer, most of them are good, and any one will do when it's the only choice available.

Amen to your last sentence.... BMW K1600GT GTL is no rumour! They are scheduled for delivery April 2011. No pictures yet but this is very intrigueing...so many bikes, so little money!

Mrs HG and I rented a White Gold Wing last week while on vacation. The 2 day rental was because RUBY was in the shop for work.
During the 2 days, we rode a little over 800 miles in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. About 350 of the miles were solo with the balance of 450 miles 2-up riding.
Here are my observations and opinions on the Gold Wing. These observations are from the seat of the rider, and not from the text book (for example, the seat height is listed on the WING as taller than my HD – no way is that accurate to me based on my riding – I preferred the WING height).
So……….. Here goes………..
.
Throttle power and response – top notch (HD should be ashamed of themselves). Great for passing trucks, etc. – the acceleration from 65 to 80 (105 twice without Mrs HG – my bad) was outstanding. Plus, no downshifting when passing quickly was nice. Because I don’t rocket off the line while riding, the from the line acceleration was not that noticeable.
.
Windshield – great idea for adjustable height, however you could hear the rattle at slow speeds. To my surprise, the lower windshield vent was not as obtrusive as I always thought. Plus, on both days the vent was useful given the 90+ degree heat.
.
Wind turbulence – frankly, no matter what height I placed the windshield, the wind caught my ears, so by the second day, I had to wear ear plugs to save my ears (half helmet). Other than the ears, the wind turbulence was fine; however the lack of more adjustments for cooling the rider was disappointing The HD has better cooling tools (redirecting air flow) for the rider.
.
Cockpit Controls – plentiful, but bulky looking – plus I would like a little more sizzle in the look – dull black bars and controls could be improved. The tiny (in comparison to HD) rear brake pedal was at times awkward to find (I kept kicking the plastic around the engine compartment) at slow speeds. I did miss the HD heal/toe shifter versus the toe only on the WING.
.
Leg room – very tight on the WING, which my knees did not like one bit. The rental did not have highway pegs, which probably would have helped.
Mirrors – wish I could take them with me onto my bike. The size and placement (farther away from the rider) were outstanding.
.
Agility – In the morning of day one, I found myself over steering into both sweepers and twisty’s. You have to muscle the HD into turns more than the WING. After some get-acquainted time, the balance of the rental was fantastic for riding. The ease of pushing the bars was very noticeable and made the ride fun. Frankly, the bike was light on its shoes, at all speeds. Very nimble bike for the size. I can see why the WING is the bike of choice for many "older" folks.
.
Seats – I now know why the WING is called a BARCO- LOUNGER. Gigantic seat width. Comfortable – yes, but also too big for my skinny (and Mrs. HG’s) backside. Because of the seats, rather than just swamp azz, we both had swamp back of the legs as well (it was over 90 degrees both days)
.
Gearing – 5 speeds – smooth, not a problem. Initially, I kept looking for 6th gear because of what I was accustomed to. Used reverse gear only once, for the heck of it. It worked fine. Wish my HD had this as it would occasionally come in handy.
.
Storage – ample and about the same as my HD. Good job.
.
Radio – sound was excellent (no headphones) and could be heard at all speeds. We did not use the CB or Intercom tools.
.
NAV/GPS – good stuff and easy to use. Kicks butt when compared to the HD feature.
.
Side clearance – much to my surprise, the twisty clearance was not ample enough. I dragged the foot pegs probably 12-15 times and my left foot twice (it was under the shifter waiting to shift up coming out of turns – I learned quickly not to do that). In a year and a half, I have only scraped floor boards a half dozen times on the HD.
.
Plastic – lots of it – I prefer a little less of it – rattles were noticeable at slower speeds, but this could be because it is a rental.
.
Gas mileage – 48 to 50’ish by my imprecise mental calculations – pretty good.
.
Riding in the rain – yes, it happened 3 times (all less than 10 minutes each) – The rain coming over the windshield kept hitting my helmet, just above the glasses, rather than going over my helmet (windshield height issue most likely). The bike handled fine in the rain as the tires had lots of tread.
.
Washing the bike – yes, I washed it near the end of the 2nd day as we had some more riding to do. A breeze to wash as the plastic was easy without a lot of crevices, etc that the HD has.
.
Bike sound – very quiet, but IMO, doesn’t sound like a motorcycle. My HD has quiet stock exhaust, but with a better sound.
Cappuccino maker – never did find it on the bike. It must be only on some models (sorry folks, had to throw one joke in).

All in all…………………… a fun two days riding the WING…………. We enjoyed it and are glad we did it!

I still like my SEUC better than the WING ...................... The Harley has SOUL!

I often think what a mess the world would be if we all liked the same thing.
Like was said above. the Wing is not a Harley and the Harley is not a Wing. To me they are both fun in different ways

Ridefar could you please go into more detail on the dry clutch as it affects the ride? I had not even given this a thought. I'm glad I put the post up, I have learned alto.

Thanks Guys.

Sure Ray, the dry clutch is only different from wet, at least to me, when using the friction zone on start up and to less degree on slow speed manuvering. The clutch feels slightly "grabby" for lack of a better term as compared to wet. Wet clutches just seem smoother in the friction zone of operation. This is not the least bit apparent once underway nor while shifting through the gears. Again, this is personal observation when going from one bike to the other and is forgotten soon as you start enjoying the ride! The BMW R series bikes have dry clutches, K series are wet and I rode a F800GS which was wet. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it, as no way should this be a deal breaker...I love my RT !

as of now, there is not much more info about the BMW K 1600 GS/GSL as shown on BMW Motorrad website itself. Presentation will be at the Intermot Cologne 10/06/2010. First 2 prototypes were shown at 07/02/2010 to select press, that much was communicated. But both bikes will definitely be availiable for next season.

But there has been a lot of trouble with the present K 1300 GT. A friend of mine had his more than 6 times at the dealers this season. As there will be even more untested technology on the new bikes I would recommend to stay away from them at least for the first year of production.

The present Gold Wing on the opposite has proven to be very reliable, you see many of them on the rough eastern European roads. If I had to buy anything else than a Harley today or next year - I would go for the Gold Wing.

The new K1600 BMW is wild.  I thought I read somewhere that Honda was going to a new 6 cylinder design?  The Goldwing is a nice ride, but the one we tested had a high pitched whine coming from the alternator that drove my wife crazy.  Being deaf, I did not hear it.  She and I still like the CVO best.

I had a 2008 for 2 seasons: it was the fastest vehicle that I have ever operated, scary fast! Could not get comfortable on long days in the saddle. Had to sell it to get my BMW. Concours 14 is very well put together, good warrany etc. But, like a Gold Wing is not an Ultra, a Kawasaki is not a BMW.
