Oh boy! The Boom! iPod module won't allow you to stream Pandora, Slacker radio, etc?  That's a huge deficiency if that's accurate. Also, I use my iphone for navigation with the Magellan app. I wonder if I wont be able to hear the audio turn by turn. I'm already having buyer's remorse and I haven't even installed it yet.

Looks like it doesn't stream for 1 big reason...it's called an "IPOD module" not an "IPHONE module" ......an IPOD just plays music, the Iphone does so much more. I think it may be set up to interface just with Itunes funtionality. Remember that you have to select the Itunes function on the phone to get any of these radios with IPOD controllers to play the music. With an  IPOD--that's all it does.....

And yes....of course you could use the headphone jack, but as 2lane said--it negates the module. And it won't charge the phone either.....

The only pain is having to take the removable radio faceplate off when parking the bike:(

trust me get in the habit of doing so...... if you dont someone might do it for you  :nervous:

its a long ride home with no tunes or voice prompts from the GPS.

Well, I just bit the bullett on this new iPod contraption. Sure is going to beat trying to change tunes on the Riderclaw, which is a real PIA. I just wasn't aware that inaddition to the $399, it's an extra $85 for the cable. WTF??

I sure hope this isn't going to interfere with the J&M 250w amp that I have planned next? I sure wish Harley would put the darned instructions up.

Yeah well, my garage is littered with piles of great mod ideas and parts that didn't quite work out. Seeing the J&M amp requires you to move the XM and CB units under the shelf, and this new Ipod unit is about the same size, so I'm fearing that the instructions plan for it to mount under the shelf as well. That means, I'll have to give up the XM or CB, unless I can jam it in somewhere else?? We'll see soon enough.

I just learned "officially" from Harley Tech Support that the Boom! ipod interface will definitely NOT work with Pandora, nor will it work with my Magellin iphone navigation app.  Therefore, the ONLY thing it has to offer is control of my itunes directory for $400 bucks.

Iron Cross... here I come!  For $105 bucks, I get all of it and only lose the handlebar controls of the ipod portion.  A small price to pay.  Since I use my iphone for nav, I use my rider's claw anyway so stashing in the bag isn't an issue.

Also... there's been a lot of talk about replacing head units and such, but the Harley H&K stereo really is a nice head unit for a motorcycle rider.  The big rubber buttons really are easy to find and press while riding with gloves on.  I don't think replacing the head unit would be a viable option for me.

Not news nor a new confirmation.  Doc's from day one have said it's an iPod controller.

I know that docs say it's an ipod "controller" and I wouldn't expect it to control the other apps, BUT there's no reason why it wouldn't just take the audio from other apps and play it though the stereo.  That's how my ipod "controller" in my car works.  I just don't understand why they would design such  limited capabilities in the interface (especially when paying top dollar) when it wouldn't be any more difficult to give us all of the functionality the iphone has to offer.  This turns it from a killer deal to a deal killer for me.

The difference seems that this device (and others like it) actually control the iPod software; not the phone writ large.  I've not seen any aftermarket device that controls the functions of the iPhone remotely beyond the iPod controls.

Anything that can pick up the audio (from the main connection or the headphone jack) can of course listen to any audio output.  But that's separate from actually running the larger device.  Since this new bike controller's purpose is to control the music from the handlebar controls, and since remote mastering can apparently only be given to the iPod software, that's what we've got.

Since you use the Iphone for Nav, you already have the riders claw mounted to the bars. So handlebar controls would not be a great loss for you. However....for those of us that don't want another thing hanging off the bars, handlebar controls are a big plus. Also the IPOD or IPHONE won't get wet.

My big deal is, when riding - even sitting still, its almost impossible to see the display on my nano with the Ridersclaw. I even put a 1/4 space on the bottom bolt to title the Ridersclaw upwards a bit and it's far too dangerous to think about changing music while on the road. However, this Ipod contraption will make it much easier to deal with, AND let me remove the Ridersclaw and stow the Ipod somewhere safe from the elements. Added bonus is, I don't have to be dismounting and reinstalling the ipod everytime I jump off the bike for a few minutes. Well worth it to me!

I agree...for me I'm just deciding if I should go aftermarket head unit as well for almost the same money. That includes all the IPOD and hand controls as well and USB support for playing MP3's from a memory stick. Even easier than ther IPOD, cheaper and less fragile. Decisions....decisions....

Mike,

I decided on a Alpine receiver (IDA-X100M) marine grade radio, Hawg Wire Universal Adapter/ DX-70 speakers /PSC150 watt amp, Sirrius/Alpine satellite tuner and a powered AM/FM fairing antenna. I had Bluegauges.com change the tach/speedo lighting to blue and changed the other gauges to blue LED’s.  This audio setup was 100% plug and play….I did not have to cut one single wire and can unplug anyone of these components or all of it and return it to a stock configuration.

I decided to go aftermarket for a few reasons…first, I just did not like the look of that big old black radio adjacent to all the nice shiny brushed aluminum SE gauges…plus I also wanted to change the radio/gauges to blue backlighting.  You would think with the MSRP of on the stock radio somebody at HD could come up with some cosmetic/functional improvements .  Although the new I-Pod interface is a step in the right direction…it’s a pricey one,  as is the HD satellite option (almost a $1000.00 for these 2 options alone).  Second, I wanted to have full control of my I-Pod Nano with my hand controls (volume, selecting tracks, pause, etc.)…I also get full charging capability, the aux cable is now a USB cable wired to the back of the unit and the song title/artist and album art is visible on a nice 2x2inch digital screen.  Once I attach the I-pod I never have to touch/or look at my I-Pod again.  The final reason was cost/functional comparison of this setup vs. keeping the stock radio …I do realize you can now change the backlighting of the stock radio (Iron Cross),  have an aux input installed and purchase a aux cable which now charges your I-Pod, or purchase the HD I-Pod interface and cable, purchase the Harley satellite tuner, etc.

I just could not see putting that kind of money into the stock radio considering many of the aforementioned mods would void my warranty (I got a 3yr warranty on the Alpine receiver) , the Alpine unit would have far superior functionality , and appearance-wise I think it better compliments our gauges/inner fairing.  Just got back from a 2500 mile trip on the bike and the system performed flawlessly…I actually listened to the satellite radio more than the I-Pod (news, sports, wx, talk shows, comedy, and virtually any genre of music you can think of)….paid for itself on this trip alone.  Here is a breakdown of costs associated with this setup (prices reflect discounts off MSRP at the time).

Alpine iDA-X100M Receiver (3yr warranty included) $346.99
Hawg Wire Universal Install Kit(HUA-470)$233.96
Hawg Wire Speakers(DX-504-70)$224.96
(Need to upgrade speakers due to different ohm rating of HD receiver vs. aftermarket receivers )

Hawg Wire 150 Watt Amp(PSC1502)$555.46 (Optional)
Alpine Sirius Satellite Tuner/Interface (KCA SC-100/SC-C1)   $92.63 (Optional)

That looks really good....And I already have the Hawg Wired amp and speakers so I am halfway there. I will decide on the radio when the time gets closer since this will be one of my off season mods.
