Not happy with my pipe choice.
« on: March 01, 2006, 07:07:45 PM »

I set my bike up with V&H duals and the Classic turn down mufflers. I'd never used these mufflers before, but I have ridden behind them and thought they sounded good and not too loud. They do sound excellent, but are just too loud for this old fart. Some pipes can be loud at idle and open throttle, but quieten down at cruise, but these don't. My wife and I rode almost 200 miles Saturday and we are convinced they need to be changed. And she likes loud pipes! We've always been able to converse back and forth, but not with these pipes. Today I thought I would pull a baffle and see if maybe I could add some packing. Har, Har.  The baffle is all of 5.75 inches long. Damn, that's the shortest baffle I've ever seen. I had the Mikuni PAT baffles once and they were a little over 12" long.
Anyway, what now?  I'm seriously thinking about a Supertrapp Supermeg. I'm not real keen on the 2 into 1 on a bagger, but I'm starting to think that's a good option for quiet, tuneable power. From what I've read, I can tune the pipe for the sound I want, then have the bike dynoed, and still be able to change sounds for trips, etc, without seriously effecting the tune. Most of the other 2 into 1's are too loud, so my choices are somewhat limited. I did put my stockers on the dual headers to see what that sounded like. Let's just say they didn't stay on there very long. So, anybody here run a S-T or have any ideas for some fairly quiet power?  S&S SPO's are out for the looks.

Thanks for helping me spend some more cash.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Just a though GC_Super , can your tips on your turndowns be rotated to turn out instead? Maybe some of your noise level comes from the sound echoing off the pavement? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

VA, One reason I took the baffle out was to see if I could do any modifications that might help. But after seeing how small that baffle is, I doubt they could be helped. I had the same thought as you about the turn downs, but I don't like the look of turnouts, and you would have to drill into the chrome. Plus they don't really turn down like some other pipes, more of a long slash cut.I think the best options is to sell them as is without any mods and go to plan B.

I certainly had turndowns on my first Glide, and they were too noisy for me. Luckily they had the end caps that could rotate, so I rotated them 1/3 to turn out, and that made a big difference.

If you like the Supertrapp idea, how about the IDS slip-ons?

Thanks, Jerry. Those are on my list of possible replacements. Don't like the tip options, byt seems like I remember someone ( mobe?) that said the SE tips will fit. I've also seen where someone used the 4" disc slip ons, but they don't show to fit our bikes?? At least not in the catalogs I've looked at. Still leaning towards the Supermeg. I've always wanted a 2 into 1, but have always opted for looks.

According to the catalog on the SuperTrapp site, you should be able to fit the 4" disc mufflers.  They only show up to '04 models, but I'm not aware of any reason they shouldn't also fit '05 and '06.

GC_Super,
I have been considering what my next move will be with my Pipe selection.  I had great results with White Brother's (WB's) e-series 2:1 on my Heritage.  They calm down at cruising but perk up (get louder) when you get on the throttle.  The Super Trapps are very similar in design as the White Brothers (in my opinion).
A very reliable tuner had suggested VH Pro-Pipe for a 2:1 or modify the SE Dual Mufflers.  However, I called him today for some opinions and he confirmed the VH Pro's will be louder than Super Trapp.  He has installed a few of the ST's and was very happy with the results.  He always liked the E-Series for their performance but they quit making them.
I had a reply from Freedom Cycle and they said the VH Pro-pipe was not the best choice for the SE 103's, but then he wants to sell their product.  I would prefer the duals but want the performance gains the 2:1's will provide.  My Tuner said VH's Pro Pipe is very cabable of handling 103's and larger. (who do you believe... [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
So to make a long story longer... I will be looking for a good price on the Super Trapps.  They list for $670 but will check with Benjy's HD to see if they provide 20% off.

Jerry, thahks again for your help. Kinda like having a personal assistant.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Magic, the best price I have found was an E-bay vendor for $539, but m&mcycles, who I like to deal with, quoted me $554 + 19 for shipping. I'm still trying to decide, but after a ride yesterday, I will have to change for sure. I like the power gains from a 2 into 1, esp down low, and the ability to change volume and tuning is another plus. Don't know if you ever visit the V-Twin forumn, but there a lot of posts about the supermeg there, with 99% being very positive. One guy there, who used to work in R&D for S-T, highly recommends running an open end cap ( $19 from summit racing) and a few less disks than w/closed cap.  Changes the tone slightly with less of the muffled, phsssst sound, but still gives equal or greater power.

magic, I saw your pm.  I did order one last Friday. Should have it soon. I thought as long as the exhaust was off, I would add a chrome (OCD) oil filler spout, so I will have to wait on that. Also, I ordered the open end cap from summit racing. According to some of the S-T experts, the open end cap will give you the best of both worlds, good low end torque with plenty left up top. They say to use about 4 to 6 less discs w/open end cap. I just hit the 700 mile mark yesterday, so it won't be long and I'll be ready to do my dyno tune. Right now with the V&H duals, RT map #36, the bike is running excellent. Idles great, cold or hot, no spits or sputters. It also sounds great, it's just a little too loud and these particular mufflers stay loud even at low throttle settings. My ride to work is at 4:30 AM and I can't make these pipes quiet. I live in a small town and go right by City Hall and I 'm just waiting for them to stop me. These guys have a rep for looking for something to do. LOL  Plus, I'm sure my neighbors will appreciate a little less disruption at such an early hour.
The good thing about pipes is you don't have to marry them, just toss them out back and try something else.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

That's it.   They will send you a free hat and a $15 gift cert.  Not bad for a $19 dollar part.
