JD and myself bought a little place on Reelfoot lake a couple of weeks ago. Reelfoot lake was formed from an earthquake in 1811-1812. It's in NW Tennessee. It's a very redneck area, so I fit in perfectly, except, I don't know how to fish. Even bought a boat. 16' Jon boat with a 40 HP Yamaha engine and a trolling motor. So far I've caught two fish, one was 2 pounds, and the other was about a pound. To date I've got gazillion dollars a pound in fish.
Took the boat on it's maiden voyage yesterday. It wasn't a pretty sight. Harley's are much more intuitive. Reelfoot lake is known for the stumps just below the water level. It's also at record lows. The guy I bought the boat from talked me into trolling poles. He made it sound easy. I envisioned trolling along at a very slow speed, fishing all the while. We had four poles out at once. All it takes is one of the lines to snag and you've got one heck of a mess. TRY and untangle that with a beer in one hand.
The boat has a v-bottom which helps keep you off the top of the cypress stumps. It has a tendancy to roll the boat off of the stump. It didn't work about 8 times yesterday. The boat would center up on a stump and land right on top with the boat lifted out of the water. There's several ways to get dislodged off a stump. Full power forward, full power reverse, full power sideways left, full power sideways right. Or power up the trolling motor (in the front) and start going round and round in circles hoping to slide off the stump. Another way is to slide off in the water and push it off the stump manually.
I'm going out again this morning for more practice. If you don't hear from me by dark, call the coast guard.
Seriously, this place is beautiful. Google Reelfoot lake sometime. It's supposed to be some of the best crappie fishing anywhere. I'll attach a few photos.
