New MBB bars arrived from Paul Yaffe this am.  They look amazing and seem to be correct size and still under the fairing.  However, I had no idea he was shipping them as we'd planned additional parts to tag along with the order. 

No heads up from them meaning that in their rush to send, I got stung for $285 worth of shipping and $100 customs - most expensive bars ever?  Must be at $760 

Not sure I can justify this conversion and at the same time, I fell as though I'm committed.  Until next time, kiss your HD dealer for cheap parts (well in comparison to PA they are)

Personally, I think all the CVO baggers should have come with painted inner fairings......that's part of the custom look.  All the reguar model of baggers have the basic black inner fairing.

Likewise, apes of any size do not belong on a bike with a fairing.  The whole design of the fairing is to protect the hands and arms from the cold, rain, etc. so to change from that is kind of an oxy-moron.

I respectfully disagree. I have 14 inch Chubbys on my SEUC4 & SEUC5. I'm getting 14 inch Yaffe Monkey bars put on my '11 CVO SG next week. I hear people talk about the weather issue all the time and in my opinion it's mostly not true, based on experience. Last year I rode 55,000 miles on my SEUC4 &5, and much of it was in the cold, 38 to 45 degrees. I completed a half dozen Iron Butt Assoc. rides and won the mileage award for my Chapter. If you wear heated gloves with apes when it's cold, all the way down to freezing, you're fine. When it rains I wear waterproof nylon gauntlet gloves and I'm good. Even with stock bars and a fairing, if it's cold outside, you need heated gloves. For me the issue is riding comfort. Some people get lower back pain with stock bars, others neck pain. I'm one that gets upper back and mostly neck pain on and after long rides with stock bars. 14 inch bars completely solved that problem for me, keeping me upright with proper pullback. If one is entering a bagger in a bike show contest, maybe you've got a point, although I've found many other advantages of taller bars, like having room for electronics. But I do agree with you that cvo baggers should come with painted inner fairings.

Different bars will definitely cure that issue, it's just that, as JC stated, the fairing limits the amount of the adjustment that will look appropriate.  If you care about the conventional styling, that is... ....har.  spyder

Exactly my problem.  I'm a younger whippersnapper, and I still get the pain between the shoulders at the base of my neck after a full day's ride, and often that will carry for a few days after too.  I plan on getting the Yaffe bars, just not sure the size.  If I have to replace lines with the 12's, I may as well go with the 14s.  Same price for the bars, and a few bucks extra for the lines.  It's much more expensive to do it twice.

I wanted to change the bars to relieve wrist pain and to give myself some more room with my long arms.


The bars came yesterday and fed-ex delivered the spiced rum inner fairing today.  All my hesitation has gone.  It looks the bomb.   

Sorry for no pics, my 6 yr old bernese mountain dog lost sight in one eye over the weekend and following what's close to $6k in vet bills we only just got the poor lad home. 

Will update tomorrow with pics of bars and inner.

Agree with point one (sort of).  The custom look is achieved by the gloss black inner fairing the CVO comes with.  Regular Street Glides have flat black inner fairings.  A painted inner fairings is too much IMHO.  I like the contrast of the black finish.  I wouldn't go through the trouble of changing it either way though.

I'm not convinced the batwing fairings were made to protect your hands. I'd like to see some MoCo liturature where design engineers say that. It might just be the design for wind disbursement purposes in combination with the windshield, or for a place to locate a speaker, and it happens to be behind the hand position. I love the look of apes on batwing models. I dislike the sound of extra loud exhaust but some guys live for it. Everyone has their right and opinion to like and dislike the looks of anything, from the color scheme of a motorcycle to the sound of exhaust.  I do mods for performance, comfort, and/or looks. Handlebars for me are mostly in the comfort department, with a little bit for looks. The looks are why I'm trying the Yaffe handlebars over the Chubbys on my new SESG. When you ride a lot, you quickly learn comfort trumps looks.

OK... I've waited it out and can wait no longer... I VOTE YES TO ALL... but you were gonna do it anyway... yer too funny!

I vote yes not because I think everyone should spend JCZ type money on their bike (though it is great when they do), or because I'm a big ape fan (while I agree that the weather excuse for not doing it was a bit lame) or even because it's your money and not mine... I vote yes because if it makes you happy, you can afford it, your spouse green lites it, it's not illegal or immoral, and if it hurts no one else... then you should do it.

As far and the painted inner goes.... I remember everyone telling me that the chrome wheel would look like ***t on Spiced Rum, but eventually had to do it... an now I'm so glad I went with my gut.

IMHO the painted inner is gonna look wicked nice and I am going to hate you when you post pics ... you are killing me to death!!!

Guys, don't take me wrong, I like apes a lot.........on the right model of bike.  I just don't think they look good on a bike with a fairing and that's just my opinion, somebody else may feel differently.  And I'm damn glad that we don't all have the same taste and the same likes and wants.......the MoCo would be in a hell of a place if there were only one model and no options or after market parts.

rheiner, if you were riding back in the 70s you should remember the brochures and ads talking about the fairing designed to protect your hands from the elements and it does.........now.  Of course back then I was riding with no fairing, no front brake because it wasn't kool........and I had apes because they were cool.   In 1986 I was riding the first year of Hertage with a solo saddle and 22" apes (you just can't imagine how comfortable they are until you've rode a bike with them) and an S&S Sidewinder stroker kit......chick magnet it was.

But as we get older (spell that more aches and pains from the broken body parts over the years) we get to a place where comfort becomes a first priority and looks and koolness become secondary (unless it's one of your first Harleys at this age.....then it may still be looks as first priority for some).  Because of comfort and to lessen the pain between the shoulder blades, I changed my bars to the Harley Touring Pullbacks.  They fit the bill......they're chrome (not stainless steel like the catalog and web site say), they're 2" up and 2" back so my hands are still behind the fairing and not above it and I didn't have to change any cables (unlike what the catalog and web site say........propaganda to get you to spend more $).  They look like they belong on a bagger and I can ride leaned all the way back against my backrest and still have a relaxed arm position (bend at the elbows) on the bars.  Neck/shoulder blade pain gone and I can spend 10-12 hours in the saddle and just fine when I get off.  Goal accomplished.

Back to the topic.........I'm anxious to see the rum painted inner fairing.  Haven't saw one yet.  I'm actually looking forward to seeing the MBM bars, also.

Now I know that I'd made out that my mods would have to be cut short since the irresponsible purchase of the headwinds lamp and bezel kit and since i felt sorry for HDNIK the new chrome rotors are on order, but please the parts are ready to ship from the US and it's now or never.  Those MBB are just calling to me and the spiced rum inner fairing may just take this bike to the max.

This is why I bought them not to offend anyone there is a 1st amendment (at least currently)

I have found that the strongest opposing opinions I read on any mod come from people who have reached a decision without any personal experience? Particularly larger wheels or bars for some reason?

The main thing is to "make it your own" I've seen several mods I personally would not do to mine. However if it floats you boat have at it.

I wouldn't buy a Ridley Automatic either but I would ride with you if you had one!
