Just so you know, the chrome on the mufflers will likely discolor from the heat without that sock in there.  I was told this by VH tech and I think the problem that CFR mufflers had in the past with discoloring was related to them not having anything in between the muffler and the baffle.  They have since corrected it with something similar to the sock VH has in there.
What effect willl the extra heat have on the saddlebags? Will the plastic melt?

Hey Jacksglide, sorry about both of my comments.  all commenting, snide and otherwise aside, the only way to keep these things clean is to keep after it.  I myself have not noticed the issue you are speaking about, and since I now live in Georgia (humidity, humidity, humidity) I am looking out for this.  I had V&H pipes on my '96 road king and they seemed to have an issue with the chrome on the end caps pitting and flaking off.  this is my first foray back into the V&H world and I am hoping they have improved on their quality control.  I have no issues with exhaust gases escaping through the gap between the cap and the muffler body.  I keep the ends clean by wiping them down sometime after each ride with some quick detailer spray (or nu-finish for the stubborn stuff) and that seems to take care of the problem.  I have ridden in the rain with them for a couple of hundred miles and not seen what you are speaking of.  I had supertrapps on my '07 CVO ultra and they did turn colors after several thousand mile so I am hoping these don't.  I ride  quite a-lot and while I like my bike clean, and that first nick or scratch really pisses me off, once it happens I can just relax and ride, (after I touch it up).  Hope you enjoy your bike as much as I do mine and we probably will run into each other out there, although we may not know it.

HDCTSS,

Really thought about commenting about your posts. But, I decided it was not worth my time. Back in the day, most of us ran Kirker pipes or some variant of these. Have had V&H on several different machines and have never been dissatisfied. Their customer service is very excellent. It is probable because this model V&H was the only good fit for the back of this bike. In doing so, the output side of the house is much larger than any other application I have ever had. It is what it is. I can deal with this, bike runs and looks great. No harm, No foul.

I was going back and forth between the Vance & Hines system, D&D Fat Cat 2/1, and the new Rinehart True Dual system with the 4" cans.  Everyone said the Fat Cats were the best performance pipe for the bike, but i didn't like the fact that i would have had to spend another $250 for a ghost pipe, plus I think they make a Harley sound like a V-Twin Honda or Harley wanna be.  I loved my Rinehart system on my 2007, so I stuck with what has worked in the past.  I am running Rineharts performance baffle, and like you, get poor throttle response until she warms up, and she kicks ass over 3500 rpm.  The Rineharts are tolerable at highway speeds, and they have a very distictive Rinehart crack when you load them up.  Are you running a closed loop tuner on your bike?
