Tire pressure Qs
« on: September 12, 2010, 08:18:26 PM »

What is everyone running for tire pressure on the 2010 SESG?  The max is 41lbs, and mine is set at 25 front and 28 rear.  My problem is taht my bike rides like a dump truck.  I thought I was going to break my back on the ride home from Sturgis.  My buddies think I am nuts.  The front end slams so hard over the slightest bump that I broke my satellite radio mount.  I have to stand off the seat as I go over RR tracks or else I will be miserable.  I have played with the rear shock dial and no difference.  Is there something I should check on the front end?  It seems to ride the stiffest up front.  I am 5'9", 145 lbs.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Also, on my Deuce, I switched from HD tires to Avon brand and the difference is night and day.  It rides like dream now.  Has anybody switched tire brands on their SESG and noticed a big difference?

That seems awful low :nixweiss:... I'm running 36lbs/Front & 40lbs/Rear on my '04 SEEG. What is the manual suggesting as tire pressures?

My guess the reason it rides so rough is the tire pressure is to low, pump them up to what the book recommends, plus with air pressure that low is dangerous and you will have premature tire wear.

Owners manual says 36, 40.  Doesnt less pressure equal a smoother ride even if it equates to premature wear?

NO SIR, Less air, you are almost riding on the rim, Thats where the jolt is coming from when you hit hard bumps or cross RR tracks.

Also you risk damaging your rims running to low an air pressure. :nervous:

Absolutely NOT.  You don't adjust ride quality with tire pressures, unless you enjoy premature failures and possible injury and/or death.  Stick with the recommended tire pressures in the manual, and if the ride doesn't meet your expectations talk to some suspension experts.

You'd know if it was so low you were bouncing off the wheels.  Or at least you should.  Pressure close to 30 is too low but you won't be bouncing off the wheels.  Running pressure that is down by a 1/3rd or more from mftr's specs will put a lot more flex in the sidewall of the tire though.  Flex it's not intended to have.  So even before you'd be bouncing off the wheels you'd be inviting tire failures on long hot days.

Inflation spec's are on the tire sidewalls for a reason.  Use 'em.  Or the blow out you experience may be your own.

You are running way too low of air pressure, you are asking for premature tire failure and one heck of a bad riding and handling experience.  Pump them up.

I urge you to not drive your motorcycle until you put proper manufacturer recommended air pressure in the tires! Your life is at risk. If it were my bike, I'd immediately replace the tires that were run at improper air pressure with new ones, for fear of them being compromised and the real risk of a blow out or loss of air pressure at speed, causing death.

I have been slowly letting air out a little at a time, I have not ridden very far at this pressure.  I rode to Sturgis at 35 psi.
