Checking tranny fluid
« on: March 11, 2006, 03:20:55 PM »

Do you  check the tranny fluid by removing the dipstick ,wiping it down and
A. thread in and loosen to check    or
B take out dipstick ,wipe and place in hole and check without rethreading it in

I picked up a funnel with an on/off nozzle and measurments on it from Autozone. I fill it up to 20 - 22oz and its usually just about right. I still check it with the dipstick touching the threads as described above. I found that if you tilt it (the dipstick) upward while putting it in that it stays out of the oil, then square it up on the threads to check. Do the opposite to remove. The reading seem more accurate that way.

And to complicate it even more it's the only measurement with the bike upright instead of on the jiffy stand. You don't have much choice but to put the bike on the lift unless you've got two people. I just changed out my fluids last night, switched to Amsoil. The tranny check leaves a lot to be desired. I'll have to check into that funnel.

I've got that same funnel, but I think my hair turned a couple of shades of gray waiting for the Redline Heavy Shockproof to run through it. I finally gave up and poured it in w/a regular funnel.

The funnel is pretty good for accurate measure. I've heated up the oil in the past... it flows much better through the funnel.

Well this I knew.So last nite I put my bike on the jack just got it up enough to make it level and then my family came by for dinner so I had to stop.Well I didn't get the jack up enough to lock it into the detents in the jack,a little safety precaution.Well I woke up this morning and my jaw dropped to the floor the bike was on its side on the garage floor.Son of a bitch! Well good news is no damage what so ever, the highway peg and crash bars did there job.Lucky I guess.Thats the last time I leave it up on the jack and not lock it in. Later,Q

You gotta love H.D.'s terminology ;) [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Jiffy stand & Derby cover... I get a laugh out of it whenever I hear it or use it.

Take Care, [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

That's one of many reasons I installed a center stand - much quicker than dragging out the lift.

I have to get a lift like Screamin Beagle has or that kick ass sunken lift .I dont need to wake up ,bleary eyed and see my prized possesion laying on the cement floor.good thing my dogs ruin all the small throw rugs in my house because they were all around my bike on the floor.Lets all breathe a sigh of releif.

I'm a pretty big boy and I couldn't bear to see my baby on the floor.I had that super human strength that David Banner was trying to achieve with the Gamma rays.I almost turned green too.
