shooting in or near LA
« on: September 18, 2010, 09:14:50 PM »

I am coming to LA for approx three weeks beginning of November 2010 and I would be keen to do some shooting while I am over. I was wondering whether any members on the site are shooters and could assist me.
Cheers. Kiwi

Keith,

There are a couple of indoor ranges in the area. One near LAX (not too far from where you took my class) called the LAX Firing Range, and one in West LA / Santa Monica called the Beverly Hills Gun Club (which is nowhere near Beverly Hills LOL!!!!). Both charge a fee and have hand guns and shoulder weapons available for you to rent and ammo to buy. Out somewhere in the San Bernadino mountains is an open range with the side of a mountain as a backdrop. I have been there only once, and that was just passing by on a motorcycle. Depending on the day, I might join you if the rest of my schedule works out.

But if you were a REAL Los Angeles resident, you would just shoot the gun from your car window while your driving just like everyone else....ROTFLMAO!

Let me know what your dates are. If it works out, maybe I'll schedule a class on the weekend so you can get your free repeat course in.

That would be cool. I am planning on arriving the 29th October and staying for three weeks. My brother in law is turning 50 so there is going to be a party in there somewhere.
I also think I will hire a bike again but for longer than a day this time. Last trip the one day hire was too rushed and it was over way too quickly.
I started pistol shooting after I got home from my last trip and I will be checking out the gun stores while I am over.  I was thinking that a ride to Las Vegas for a few days midweek might be the go as well.

But if you were a REAL Los Angeles resident, you would just shoot the gun from your car window while your driving just like everyone else....ROTFLMAO! What does this signature mean? I did not see anyone shooting from car windows last time I was over. Is it seasonal behaviour or what?Let me know what your dates are. If it works out, maybe I'll schedule a class on the weekend so you can get your free repeat course in. If time permits and it suits your schedule then that would be great.Mark

There's another one called Oak Tree Gun Club at 23121 Coltrane Ave Newhall, CA 91321-3959. I shot trap there today.  Have shot pistols there before.  The pistol ranges are pretty good - metal targets.

Thanks Vic, I will see what I can find out about it on the net. I will need to hire a gun as I cannot bring mine with me.

East LA has does not charge as long as you keep moving.
You just have leave your brass. (you would be crazy to pick it up anyway)

PS locals have been known to shoot back

You have to be aware of the season for either pistols, shot guns, etc.
AND, keep in mind there IS a limit per day.
Overall, I think the season runs from Jan to May for pistols, and May to Dec for shotguns and other long guns.
IIRC

Keith,

Parts of Los Angeles are known for criminal gangs. Although I do NOT wish to paint all residents of these communites with a broad brush, South Central Los Angeles is known for black gangs, and East Los Angeles are known for hispanic gangs. Thes gangs recruit youths by simple initiation rite such as spray painting walls, also know as "tagging" with the name of their gang or symbols, or stealing parked cars from the street. When they become full gang members they participate in crimes to include extorting small business owners, armed robbery, prostitution and the trafficking of drugs. From this "culture" comes a littany of "Ghetto" expressions such as "Jack", the short term for car jacking, or stealing a car or property at gun point, "clocking", or standing on a corner for a predetermined amount of time doing your work selling drugs, or "Pimping". The term "pimp" means to take a bland looking item and making it attractive so that it becomes desired.

As expected these criminal enterprises are VERY territorial. They regularly engage in open combat over certain parts of the city under dispute between the two gangs. The poor residents who live there are often caught in the cross fire. As these open battles rage, the weapons they are using often discharge the empty "brass" shell casings on the street. The shell casings all leave certain firing pin markings and chareteristics on the primers on the back side of the casings. These markings are often used as evidence to convict shooters or otherwise gain probably cause in furtherance of prosecution. So a person engaged in a gun battle has to make a decision to either pick up the "spent brass" and dispose of it somewhere else to get rid of the evidence, or leave it and just get another weapon for the next crime.

Welcome to Los Angeles!!!!

Thanks guys, I figured it was a case of local knowledge. Forewarned is forearmed as they say. Or in my case not armed at all so stay the hell out of those areas alltogether..
