Mirrors
« on: October 17, 2010, 12:24:33 AM »

I've had my 09 for a while now and I really need to do something about the mirrors.  I'm not a little guy but I can't seem to adjust the mirrors like I prefer them on all other bikes I've owned.  The seat and handlebars make it virtually impossible to see directly behind me using the mirrors.  I can adjust them to see lanes on either side ok, but I like to be able to see behind and next lane on either side.  All I see are my shoulders...  anyone else have this issue or a good solution.  Thanks

harlee79,

I am 6'4" Tall and I had the same problem with my mirrors as you are having on your '09 CVO Softail Springer.  I am so tall that all was seeing in my mirrors was my shoulders and not the traffic behind me.

What I did to correct this was to place the '08 CVO spacers under the risers on my '09 CVO.  If you take a look at the '08 CVO Springer they have two spacers under the risers so that the handlebars wouldn't impact the gas tank as you make tight turns.  Ask the parts manager at your local dealer to give you a look at the parts catalog (handle bar page) of the '08 CVO Springer.
This was changed on the '09 CVO as they used handlebars with a bigger upsweep from the risers.  You will get about an inch and half boost from these spacers under your risers on your '09 CVO.  It was just enough to give me a peek over my shoulders.
By the way, you will not have to replace your throttle, clutch or brake cables either - they have plenty of length for these spacers.

Best of luck,

Jon21

Thank you Jon21, I was hoping to get some insight on this issue and couldn't imagine I was the only one with it.  But after nothing but cricket's for a while after starting this thread I thought I must be the only one with the issue.  Thank you for the info i'll check this out it might be just the trick.  Welcome to the site.  :2vrolijk_21:

Harlee79,

Thanks for the reply to my posting.  I hope you find a solution that fits your needs.  The reason I choose to use the '08 spacers on my '09 CVO is that I wanted to keep my bike as original as possible.  I didn't want to use a non-Harley, nor a non-CVO part, on my bike.  I figured the '08 CVO springer spacers would be a nice fit on my bike and I was right - they look perfect.

I see you have a set of 2-into-2 Vance and Hines exhaust on your blue '09 FXSTSSE3.  Are you happy with these new pipes.  I am considering a set for my bike as well.  My first deviation from the CVO and Harley parts list on my bike.  I was considering a set of screaming eagle slip-ons for my bike but I do like the look of the Vance and Hines pipes.  Do they perform well?

Let me know,

Jon21

I really like the sound of the pipes more than anything, its quite a bit different than the stock ones, and performance is good.  I think the consensus is that a 2-1 has the most performance gains but I really liked the looks of the 2-2 V&H.  You'll notice that alot of folks have them on this bike, seems to be the most common exhaust i'd say.  As for seats your going to find out how limited the options are for that, especially for a solo seat for an 09.  Anyway thanks again and enjoy your scoot..

Here's another option:  Chubby's 12/5" Apes.  I know it's not HD's, but really looks great and adds so much to the comfort of riding.  Also - installed a Supertrapp 2-into-1 and (with some engine work) got my SE110 over 100HP.

I tend to agree with JD.  Apes are the way to go.  I was a little hesitant when making the decision but the look of ape hangers just fit on the springer.  These are 14" fat apes from Hill Country Custom Cycle.  $500 Will get you EVERYTHING you need to install them in one day minus $6 for wire connector pins.  I can see everything behind me and the comfort is better than any bike I have owned or ridden.

I had the same problem. What I did was go to the dealer and ask for a mirror extension kit. It was basically two 2 inch chrome extensions they look fine on the bike and more importantly I can easily see behind me now. Good luck.

I agree with the apes. I put 16s on my (non CVO) Softail and mounted the mirrors on the bottom. Clear view of everything. Supprisingly comfortable ride too. Rode 1100 miles a couple of months ago to Omaha and Utah beaches in Normandy from Germany with no complaints.....other than my arse.... :'(

I had to call them to get what I needed.  The guy I talked to knew everything about my bike when I was talking to him instead of getting some tech nerd or sales associate secretary.
