CVO edition number
« on: October 22, 2010, 02:20:44 PM »

I have seen in some of your posts the number of your edition.  i.e. 150 of 999.  I have a FLHTCUSE5, and I dont see this on mine.  Is it just on some color combo's or??

To date the only "numbered" CVO's are the 2010.5 Dark Ultra...

The so-called "limited edition" bikes have a little decal or medallion that might say "1 of 999" for instance, but most CVO's have not been so adorned.  Only when Harley feels the need to boost prices even higher do they proclaim some bogus "limited edition" status, even when the supposed "limited" quantity is higher than many of the entire model runs of previous bikes.  Case in point, 999 of the Dark Ultra's is more than the entire production run of the CVO FXR's, or of most of the CVO's when broken out by colors.

If you really want a limited edition, once you get your first scratch then just get a little badge made, or better yet get a painter to hand letter a little "1 of 1" badge for your bike.  Odds are no one else will have the exact same scratch in the exact same place.

I had also heard that the CVO bikes are assambled by one person to a bike.  Is that true?

It sure looks like someone's been "sold a bill of goods".

IMHO, there really isn't anything all that special about our CVO's as they come from the factory.

Simply put, the MoCo had a whole bunch of left over parts on their P&A shelves after attempting to put the aftermarket guys out of business.  The way I figure it someone in marketing came up with the brilliant idea of taking all these left over chrome bits and pieces and sticking them on a bike... Then they gave it a unique paint scheme, just to make us feel special, and why not boost the engine a bit at the same time.  After all, everyone was starting to look for more power back in the late 90's anyways.

Presto!  The new CVO idea took off!  And we're still buying them today.

Don't get me wrong, I love my CVO's.  However over the years I have come to learn that no matter how special my bike may be to me, I keep adding to it and changing it to make it my own.  With my Duracell being #619 of 1,800 I have to do something to make it extra special!  I have also learned that there is always another "special edition" bike (CVO or not) with a special paint scheme or with lots of chrome or with a big motor parked around every corner.

Enjoy your bike and hopefully it is special to you, which is all that matters - no matter what number it is, or who or how many had a hand in building it.

I talked to the regional HD rep this week about an issue with my bike and asked this question. According to him, up until the '11 model year the CVO bikes were assembled by a team of technicians who only did CVO bikes. Starting in 2011 the CVO bikes are assembled on the assembly line along with non-CVO bikes.

As for a signature, I don't think so....I have had the fairing, tank, saddlebags & side panels off the bike and didn't see a signature (or paint code) anywhere.

As stated earlier, up to model year 2010, the bikes were hand assembled by teams in a small plant behind the main assembly line building at the York, PA manufacturing plant.  The softail models were assembled by two individuals from start to finish, whereas the FLH/FLT models were assembled by a team of 4 (two would start the bikes and put the engine, wheels, etc, then the other two would put the finishing touches; tins, wiring and final assembly).  Once the CVOs were assembled, they would move them over to the main assembly building to wait in line for their test run in the booth.  There were no signatures applied, nor will you find a paint code on a CVO.  (The CVO colors are supposedly a guarded secret and the MoCo doesn't give out the paint codes). For MY 11 they started making the CVOs on the general assembly line.

Jerry, I like it   LOL

I am always amazed at how the words "Limited Edtion" seems to work in a marketing campaign.

You sure about the '03's?? I've got a buddy that has an '03 SERK and don't remember seeing a number plate "___ of ___" and the MoCo website is saying that approximately 3600 ('03 SERK) were made. With the extended production run they had for the 100th Anniversary I don't believe they were numbered. :nixweiss:
