If your bike already had the HD XM module (which plays through the HK radio), would the 665 still offer anything else over the 660?

I believe it offers XM weather and traffic updates as well if you pay for the service. Don't think thats available on the HK XM module.

    "What makes them specifically for motorcycles?" Is a good question and as I used a standard "car" Garmin NuVi for a long time, I can tell you that the answer is that there is a LOT of difference on the bike units.
    • waterproof
    • glove friendly
    • larger icons/fonts
    • larger keyboard (also PITA because it's on two pages)
    • More Rugged
    • Quick detachable with carry case
    • with car kit, can be used in your car, also
    • and the number ONE Biggest difference is the way it operates regarding Audio:
    • Bluetooth for bike use vs Bluetooth for car use

    Car units pair with your phone to become a speakerphone. Useless on a bike. They don't support Bluetooth for audio OUT, only phone IN. Useless on a bike. Also, many car GPSes don't even HAVE an audio OUT headphone jack. I had to ad a jack to my 1390 so that I could pipe its audio out to a separate BT transmitter.

    The ZUMOs pair with your phone to send the phone's audio to the bike;
    They pair with a bt headset to send the ZUMO's instructions to your headset
    They pair with a bt headset to send the ZUMO's music, audiobooks, XM radio to your headset or to the bike.

After a couple of years with my "hacked" NuVi 1390,,,,,,,, I finally bought a 665. NO regrets.

The Road Tech has the ability provide info thru the HD radio, the ZUMO does not, or didn't a few years ago. The HD Road Tech can be bought for 20% off at select dealers which made it substantially cheaper, or at least a few years ago when I bought mine. AND the HD had a 2 year warranty and the Zumo a 1 year warranty.
All things considered the Road Tech was a much better purchase. I bought a Square Trade Warranty on my RT 660. 22 months in the unit started to leak water, the screen blurred. I took it to the local HD dealer just to see, really figured I would have to use the Square Trade warranty, they took my damaged one and promised a call asap. Two days later I got a vmm to stop in my new 660 was there. That once again makes the Road Tech a much better purchase.

It's true; the Zumo is lacking a software mod that the RoadTech does have....that interfaces with the NIM to 'take over' the HK radio to play its turn alerts. Even if you install the NIM the Zumo will not trigger it. That particular function was of no import to me as I'm using Bluetooth headsets and pairing the Zumo to them as well.

I got the 665 when I bought my bike.  I used up the XM trial period and never looked back.  The receiver is terrible, sound quality is atrocious.  The "Harley" version is great because it does have all the dealerships, etc....well worth it.  I think either include lifetime updates as well.  I bought mine in 2014 and it still does updates.  That being said, once the trial was up I unplugged the unsightly antenna, poked the cords into the nacelle and haven't looked back.  If I had to do it over again I would have saved the money and got the 660.  Especially nowadays with Bluetooth...you don't need the XM antenna. 

Its also great because it is compatible with the Harley Ride Planner and you can upload your routes, etc.  Very cool feature....

Interesting, I have had the complete opposite experience. I got the 665 to put on my '09 R1200GS which doesn't have many fancy items, like radios, on it. I found the XM radio to work well with my Sena BT headset. I think antenna placement has a lot to do with reception. I also had the XM Weather capability during the trial period. That saved my butt a few times too. So if I had a choice between the 665 vs 660 and no radio on my bike, I would definitely go 665. And if weather radar is a concern, even better. Please note, if you have a tank bag and an iPhone, you can get a Weather Radar app but it only works when you have cell network available.
