Which IPOD devices work for the new IPOD interface
« on: November 04, 2010, 12:12:02 PM »

I know there are several threads on IPOD interface out here. Sorry if mine is out of place.

I have ordered, but not yet received the install kit for IPOD interface.  I have been out looking for an IPOD device to use once its installed.   Prices are all over the place for IPOD devices,  Generations, models,  IPHONES etc.     Im hoping to get a comfirmed list of what works on the interface and what doesnt, what models should and should NOT be used, what fits well in the teather pouch etc.

I have never owned an IPOD device, and know nothing about them.  I have decided after price checking on IPHONES i have no intention of investing in one of those. 2400 dollar contract and the cost of the phone is way out of my scope.

I want to go with the least expensive device, that has enough  storage for ~20 CD's worth of music,  mount it in the saddle bag ,  and never see it again.

Post pics if ya got em.

Thanks

The only device Harley really recommends for the interface is the Nano.  In fact, HD provided a Nano with one of the CVO models that came equipped with the iPod interface.  The Shuffle will not work at all, the Classic has a hard drive that is subject to problems caused by vibration and jarring and is not recommended, and the Touch and iPhone will work but are not "certified for use..." according to the HD iPod Interface owners manual.

If 20 CD's is all you want to put on it, the 8 gig Nano will be plenty for you.  It should hold about 2000 songs.  I found the best price on the Nano at Costco.  You will also have to load iTunes onto your PC or Mac and then put your CDs onto iTunes and then load them onto the Nano.  That will probably take you an hour or so, not counting how much time it takes you to figure out iTunes.  Once you have your music on the iPod you can stick it in the tether and forget about it.  I'd be willing to bet you'll end up with way more than 20 CDs on it down the road.

Good luck!

HD is supplying the Nano with the round thumb control thingy. The screen is not touch.

I have the 5g, which has the round thingy. I haven't seen the 6g yet so I can't speak to it.  If it has the same connector on the bottom (standard iPod plug) as the 5g I think it would work fine.

I have a 6g nano...it works fine.  My 5g worked just as well.  I'd get whichever you can find cheapest.

supposedly the iPod touch will work with the interface, but you supposedly have to start it before you close the saddle bag, then it will be controlled like normal with the handlebar controls.  I haven't tried my Touch with the SEURG, so I can't confirm that.  I just use the Nano that came with the bike and leave it in the pouch.

well,   thanks to all this great info,  i picked up an IPOD NANO gen5 16gb  with camera, and FM radio on Craigslist this evening for $60 bucks ...   im very please with the deal ...  works great,  but me thinks this Itunes application is a little confusing ...  i did get some songs down loaded to the ipod,  but can figure out how to creat folders .. oh well,  i will see if the neighbor can spare their 10 year old to show me .. hahahah

so,  im good to go except waiting for the ipod adapter to install in the SEEG ...   perhaps it will be here  by the weekend ...

Thanks for all the feedback ...

I just bought the new mini square iPod nano 16gb. I have two other iPods that I've use without issues on the AUX radio input and then on the iPod interface module. The old one is a 40gb classic and the newer one of the two is a 160gb classic. Both functioned great using either interface methods.

The new mini nano works great as well. On my SERG I just ran the plug end of the cable into my right side fairing glove box. I do like the nano the best.

If you just load a CD and click import, iTunes does the rest.

To create a playlist, click the little + at the lower left of your sceen and name it what you want that playlist to be called.

The problem I have on the iPod 160 classic is that I have 300 playlists and scrolling through them is a real drag. I recommend you limit the number of playlists so you can scro quicker from the HK soft touch buttons while you're riding. I have that many because I have all the major artists listed as playlists with their greatest hits at a minimum in each playlist.

The major issue I have with iTunes is how terribly slow it is. It takes maybe 10 seconds to scroll with my mouse sometimes and just stalls other times. I have about 400gb of music in iTunes and I think that has a lot to do with the speed of the program.

But 20 CD's you should have no big problems.

Good luck with your new toy.

That is correct, supposedly you do the same thing with the iPhone as you do the iPod Touch.   :2vrolijk_21:

Yes. I have a fairly new touch in my right saddlebag and it works reasonably well. When you stop for a break it will not work again unless you have powered it down prior to starting the bike. Kind of annoying :-\ but as long as you remember it's no big deal.  My iPhone 4 works the same as the touch but I don't normally use it. I just leave the touch connected.  Hopefully an iPod or HK update will fix this soon.
I believe it may be a sleep/standby issue as today it worked without rebooting after a fairly short stop. I plan to change the sleep settings and check again.

Speaking from ownership of 6 different ipod devices I would get the nano and the 16gb. That may sound like allot but when you start piling on the songs it will fill up fast! Its better to have too much than too little. Your talking about ($50 difference in price) and (you needing to make the whole purchase again) in a few years to hold more music. Ipod classic as mentioned has a hard drive and would frequently lock up. My 16gb nano is almost full and has just over 3200 songs. The thing is if you like music you will constantly be adding songs a couple a month until "TILT" your full!  That's my 2 cents and I have been riding with Ipods for over 50k miles and 5 years. My Motto: Never leave home without Gun, Wallet, Cell phone & Ipod!

Ipod tip: 1) When scanning in your Cd's don't put in every song unless you like them. If you do soon you will fill up your Ipod with a bunch of "B" side crap you don't like and be forever skipping songs!
2) I also build playlist for the road so I can set it and forget it!
3)If you buy your Ipod direct from Apple you get 2 lines of free ingraving! That's a nice personal touch and added security.
I am a True Ipod Geek just ask me anything!
