HD LCD Oil Temp Dipstick
« on: May 11, 2004, 09:17:47 PM »

What a POS!

Bring the Bike home from the 1000 mile service...drove about 13 miles of stop 'n go in high eighties this afternoon.

Was making the turn onto the I-495 on-ramp and accelerating at the appropriate SEEG rate...all of a sudden I notice blue smoke behind me.  Immediately pull over to the breakdown lane to find oil on the exhaust and splattered around the general area.  I heard that the O-ring design is prone to blowing oil out the seal...now I have seen it for myself...I reseat the dipstick, clean up the oil as best I could and continue with the rest of the trip.

Got home and put the stock dipstick back in...anyone want to buy an LCD Dipstick?

Looks like I will want one oil temp guages that are being designed!

I have had mine for 3 years and have never had that problem, I have had to put a battery in it. also dont try to force it out I have had it come apart in my hands which was kind of scary, but that has not happened since. Seems to work to good.

Yeah, the cam design is interesting but the simple o-ring is not as beefy as the stock stick.

I blew out the LCD dipstick unit twice in the first few weeks with the 116 and the Baker six-speed. I never actuall lost the unit, it just came out about half way. I then finally figured out the locking cam action on the digital dipstick. (once installed turn it a few degrees clockwise to lock it in.

About two months ago I put in the dash mounted unit from Roger (great upgrade) so I figured I would take out the LCD unit and put back in the stock dipstick. On my first ride it blew the stock unit ALL THE WAY OUT OF THE BIKE!! This got oil all over the bike, on my passengers leg and on TWO bike following behind me!

I think the v-rod uses a screw-in dipstick.  I wonder if this would be a good mod to come up with for those with anything more than stock engine.

My LCD dipstick has come out also--sure makes a mess. From what I've found out, on the earlier models, the crankcase breather goes into the top of the transmission housing. The later ones have the breather tube going into the dipstick housing. The later ones were supposed to fix the problem----is this not true? I was going to convert mine to the dipstick breather but I won't if yours are still blowing out. Do you have the later models with the breather going into the dipstick housing?

How's this for screwy? Yes, that's oil in the display. This one is going back for warranty replacement.

There going to tell you it's supposed to be like that. It is designed to display volume of oil, and by the looks of that you may be running a little low. :huepfenlol2:

I must have mis-read the instructions. I didn't know the oil film in the display was supposed to match up to the bars in the display. Thanks for pointing that out to me. I would have been embarrassed if I had taken it to the parts counter and the parts-expert-of-the-week told me that. Better to be corrected by friends.  ;D

Anyone have the new one for the 2007's?  I think it is a screw in design, but not sure.  Dealer has had them on order forever and I am waiting to see one before I buy it.

Noticed the other ones are made in Germany, got to give the German's credit that they used to build great stuff and had a lot of pride in what they did!
