throttle body size for my set up
« on: January 02, 2011, 11:50:00 AM »

Hey Bros,
Wondering on what size TB I should consider with the parts I have to add to my 2001 SERG. I have HTCC cnc ported heads, matching high compression pistons, 258 SE cams and D and D fat cat 2 into 1 exhaust. I may consider buying  Andrews 37g cams, I hear they are a nice hot rod street cam. Thanks for now. Later, Go Hard

There aren't a ton of options for the old Marelli throttle bodies anymore.  And most of the options that are out there are very pricey.  One really worth considering, however, is Barry Gerolamy's upgrade of your existing TB.  Check the following link and scroll down a bit to find part # TC7.

http://www.bcheads.com/fuel.htm

Price is $325 and they'll take it to 42mm.  I had that on my 95" that had a small cam upgrade, the heads touched up and FatCats and the bike ran great.

Don't you remember?  The ECM and cam position sensor (at least) took a dump on the road up by St. Louis one day last spring.  A local indie shop had a Zippers package on the shelf that he'd never been able to move and was glad to sell.  Was basically a Delphi conversion that changes the ECM, 02 and later throttle body and adds wide band.  The ECM is a Blundermax Thundermax in a Marelli ECM form factor.

The shop loaned me some tools so in a truck stop parking lot on a long Saturday I pulled the tank and changed it all out.  Being a Delphi type system now the dead cam sensor is no longer needed.  So it's in the hole but unplugged from the bike and no longer ever again a concern.  The kit included a 46mm two piece TB and intake and matching air cleaner back plate and a fuel rail setup that mated it all to the dual pressure and return lines from the Marelli tank.  You've got to cut the metal ends of the TB end of the fuel line and put the remainder on nipples on the new fuel rail.

All in all it was a chore to do in a parking lot.  But it's proved to be an effective kit and the bike really has ran better than it did when it was still Marelli.  Most important of all was rode it home that night and didn't have to leave it at an unknown shop 250 miles from home while I rode the bus back.

I say it ran "better."  It does.  The caveat to that was the software and not the hardware.  Once again the base map that was in Zippers library that best "matched" the motor really really did not.  Have no idea where they get off with some of this stuff.  But after quite a bit of time and miles dialing in the timing curves it's great.  Can't knock it at all.

Would be glad to send you the upgraded Marelli TB.  But no longer have it.  Not too long after the work was done a local with an 01 Road King had a butterfly shaft break on his bike.  He was significantly underemployed at the time and the Road King is his major source of transportation.  So he got a present.

Might be little big for stocke 95 ci but HPI 51mm was the best single part I ever bought for my bike.  Fixed ever little qirk that the M&M tb ever had.  Has the large Screamin eagle injectors and 62 psi fuel reg included, along with need fuel lines.  You do need to get a differnt air cleaner, I modifided a heavy breather to work.

Thanks.  But you or most anyone here would've done the same.  TB was only collecting dust and the new setup works so well it would never have gone back on.  Plus parts availabilty is now better with the newer TB installed.

Wouldn't ever have bought this kit "just becasue."  Had no problems with the Marelli system.  That is until the ECM crapped out.  The conversion kit is gawdawful pricey to do on a whim.  If memory serves $1450 was the price he had on the box.  But he'd had it for awhile and discovered it was a poor inventory choice.  He probably felt sorry for me crapped out away from home too.  So for $850 and some loaner tools I had it all done.

Honestly it's a good kit.  Just checked and Zippers has them on their website now for $1800ish with a couple different TB options.  As Marelli parts start going obsolete something like this will have some traction.  While you could swap enough parts to truly change one of the old bikes to Delphi I don't think you couldn't do it for that money.  Once installed the kit really is an improvement to.  A Marelli bike with wide band sensors (whodathunkit :huepfenlol2: )!  There was nothing like the Twin Tec scanner for the Marelli bikes so even that basic monitoring was something more difficult to do at home.  But with this you pick up all the monitoring, data, and controls of the Thundermax software.  So your ability to maintain at home is actually significantly improved.  And you get a little bigger TB in the package.

Looks like now they're only offering 50mm and bigger as options within the kit.  They used to offer a 46mm also.  For most old Marelli bikes at 80 or 88 cubic inches they're probably offering options now bigger than the engine needs.  But it's good to have options.

Nice looking bits.   Gerolamy also has a fuel rail setup and TB to convert newer intakes.  But you have to make other pieces work to bring it all together.  I appreciate the ingenuity and effort we all do to not just maintain these bikes but actually improve them in the process.
