Don't you remember? The ECM and cam position sensor (at least) took a dump on the road up by St. Louis one day last spring. A local indie shop had a Zippers package on the shelf that he'd never been able to move and was glad to sell. Was basically a Delphi conversion that changes the ECM, 02 and later throttle body and adds wide band. The ECM is a
Blundermax Thundermax in a Marelli ECM form factor.
The shop loaned me some tools so in a truck stop parking lot on a long Saturday I pulled the tank and changed it all out. Being a Delphi type system now the dead cam sensor is no longer needed. So it's in the hole but unplugged from the bike and no longer ever again a concern. The kit included a 46mm two piece TB and intake and matching air cleaner back plate and a fuel rail setup that mated it all to the dual pressure and return lines from the Marelli tank. You've got to cut the metal ends of the TB end of the fuel line and put the remainder on nipples on the new fuel rail.
All in all it was a chore to do in a parking lot. But it's proved to be an effective kit and the bike really has ran better than it did when it was still Marelli. Most important of all was rode it home that night and didn't have to leave it at an unknown shop 250 miles from home while I rode the bus back.
I say it ran "better." It does. The caveat to that was the software and not the hardware. Once again the base map that was in Zippers library that best "matched" the motor really really did not. Have no idea where they get off with some of this stuff. But after quite a bit of time and miles dialing in the timing curves it's great. Can't knock it at all.
Would be glad to send you the upgraded Marelli TB. But no longer have it. Not too long after the work was done a local with an 01 Road King had a butterfly shaft break on his bike. He was significantly underemployed at the time and the Road King is his major source of transportation. So he got a present.
